Winterscheid is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Prüm .

geography

Winterscheid is located southwest of Bleialf and about 50 km northwest of Bitburg , near the Belgian border. The entire area belongs to the North Eifel Nature Park . The residential areas Heltenbachermühle, Himmesberg (Winterscheiderberg) and Winterscheidermühle also belong to Winterscheid.

history

In the first documentary mention of the place in 1304, a witness Hildebrandus de Winterscheid is mentioned. The place originally belonged to the Principality of Prüm , later to the Electoral Trier office of Prüm , and was assigned to the Bleialf mayor . 16 houses in Winterscheid are documented from 1777, 91 inhabitants are mentioned in 1779.

From 1798 to 1814, under the French government, the place became the main town ( chef-lieu ) of a mairie in the canton of Schönberg, arrondissement Prüm, of the Saar department .

After the Kingdom of Prussia had taken over the Rhineland due to the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Winterscheid became a mayor in the newly formed district of Prüm in the Trier administrative district in 1816 . The municipalities belonged to the mayor's office in Winterscheid :

• Langenfeld with a mill;
• Urb (today part of Winterspelt) with the Steinbrück homestead;
• Winterscheid with the village of Mützenich , the hamlet of Schweiler, a mill and the Gaspers house;
• Winterspelt with the village of Ihr, the hamlets of Elcherath, Hemmeres and Wallmerath, the Eigelscheid homestead and four individual houses.
