Günter Krämer (doctor)

Günter Krämer (born January 7, 1952 in Winterscheid / Eifel) is a German neurologist and epileptologist working in Switzerland .

Live and act

After studying psychology (up to the preliminary diploma) and human medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University as well as specialist training at the Neurological University Clinic Mainz (with Hanns Christian Hopf ), Krämer was senior physician at the neurological clinic of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz until 1994. Even as an assistant he was interested in a. especially for epilepsy , set up an epilepsy outpatient clinic with his colleague Roland Besser and started scientific research.

From 1994 to 2013, Krämer was chief physician and medical director of the Swiss Epilepsy Center in Zurich / Switzerland. Since then he has been working part-time at the Bellevue Neurocenter in Zurich / Switzerland.

From 2001 to 2016, Krämer was President of the Swiss League Against Epilepsy . During this time he worked together with the specialist societies of neighboring countries ( German Society for Epileptology and Austrian Society for Epileptology ) and a. In 2001 in Zurich, 2007 in Basel and 2013 in Interlaken, three joint annual meetings (three-country meetings) were organized and chaired.

From 2009 to 2013 he was a member of the Therapy Commission and from 2013 to 2021 he was appointed to the Educational Commission of the ILAE. Since 2017 he has also been a member of the Publication Task Force, Editor-in-Chief of the ILAE-Wikipedia Epilepsy Initiative and thus also on the Executive Committee of the ILAE.

Krämer has been married to Doris Krämer-Christmann (née Christmann; * 1952) since 1974. Their two children Judith and Dirk were born in 1977 and 1980, respectively.

Krämer has two older brothers, the oldest is the economist Walter Krämer .

After moving to Switzerland, Krämer developed the Swiss Epilepsy Clinic into a national and international reference center. In 2001 it was renamed the Swiss Epilepsy Center. After Heinz Gregor Wieser (Senior Physician in Neurology at the University Hospital Zurich [USZ]) retired in 2008, this also included non-invasive and invasive presurgical diagnostics. This required close cooperation not only with neurosurgery , but also with neuroradiology and neurology at the USZ. During his time as Medical Director, the number of inpatient clarifications increased fivefold while the length of stay was drastically reduced.

Krämer is (co-) author of numerous articles in national and international journals and of book chapters. In addition to numerous specialist publications, including the Lexicon of Epileptology, Krämer is the author of numerous patient guides, particularly on the subject of epilepsy. He is also co-editor of journals such as Current Neurology, Neurology International Open and Epileptology of the Swiss Epilepsy League.
