The International League Against Epilepsy , English International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) is an international medical professional society to combat epilepsy . It was founded in 1909 in Budapest with initially 10 national sections (Algeria, Germany, England, France, Holland, Italy, Austria, Russia, Hungary and the USA). 114 national professional societies are now members. The German-speaking sections of the ILAE are the German Society for Epileptology , the Austrian Society for Epileptology and the Swiss Epilepsy League .

membership

Membership in the ILAE requires membership in a national section or specialist society. In the German-speaking countries these are the German Society for Epileptology, the Austrian Society for Epileptology and the Swiss Epilepsy League.

Activities and goals

Society's purpose is to ensure that health workers, patients, governments, and the global public have the education and research resources necessary to understand, diagnose, and treat people with epilepsy. Its aims are to promote and disseminate knowledge about epilepsy, to promote research, education and training and to improve patient care, in particular through prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to the board of directors of the ILAE, there are 6 regional commissions that deal with issues specific to the respective regions and organize regional congresses (see below). The members of the regional commissions are elected by the national sections or professional associations belonging to the respective region, as is the ILAE board, for a term of office of 4 years (currently; 2017–2021).

Congresses

After it was founded, only five international meetings of the ILAE took place until 1946, also due to the two world wars. Since then, regular meetings have been organized, both at international and regional level.

Since 1981 the ILAE has organized the International Epilepsy Congress (IEC) together with the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), initially annually and since 1983 every two years . The 32nd IEC took place in Barcelona from September 2nd to 6th, 2017 , the 33rd will be held in Bangkok from June 22nd to 26th, 2019 .

Since 1994, a European Epilepsy Congress has been held every two years in Europe by the Commission on European Affairs of the ILAE in cooperation with the IBE, the 12th 2016 in Prague, the 13th from 26th to 30th August 2018 in Vienna and the 14. 2020 in Geneva.

Awards

Various ILAE awards are presented every two years as part of the International Epilepsy Congress. In addition, a prize is awarded every year for an article in the journal Epilepsia .

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award 'Life Achievement Award ' is the highest honor given every two years by the joint Executive Committee of the ILAE and the International Bureau for Epilepsy ( IBE ). It honors extraordinary personalities with a proven track record of working against epilepsy. Chosen people will be honored with two silver candle holders engraved with the ILAE and IBE logos, the name of the award and the winner.
