Christian E. Elger

Christian Erich Elger (born October 21, 1949 in Augsburg ) is a German neurologist and epileptologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart in 1968, Elger first studied mathematics and chemistry in Tübingen . He moved to Münster and studied medicine there. In 1976 he received his doctorate and received his license to practice medicine.

From 1976 to 1982 he was an assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Münster (with the neurophysiologist and sculptor Erwin-Josef Speckmann ) with a habilitation in physiology in 1982. He then completed his training as a doctor for neurology in Münster, Memphis (USA) and Zurich until 1985 (Switzerland).

From 1985 to 1987 Elger was senior physician at the Department of Neurology at the University of Münster. In 1986 his venia legendi was expanded to include neurology.

He has been Professor of Epileptology at the University of Bonn since 1987 , and from 1990 to 2018 (retirement) as Full Professor and Director of the Clinic for Epileptology at the University Hospital Bonn (as successor to Heinz Penin ). 2017 co-founder of the Beta International Epilepsy Center (Beta IEC) at the private Beta Clinic in Bonn with work there from 2018.

From 1997 to 1999 he was first chairman of the German section of the ILAE (since 2004: German Society for Epileptology ).

In 2001 he and other neuroscientists founded the “Decade of the Human Brain” initiative (see Decade of the Brain ). In the same year he was also elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2002 the Life and Brain research center , which he co-founded , was inaugurated next to the clinic, which was also newly opened in 2000. Elger has been Director of the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (CENs) at the University of Bonn since 2009 .
