Erwin-Josef Speckmann (born April 25, 1939 in Münster ) is a German neurophysiologist , painter and sculptor .

Life

After studying in Vienna and at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster (until 1965), Speckmann worked from 1967 at the Physiological Institute of the University of Münster (with Heinz Caspers ). There in 1966 doctorate and 1969 habilitation in physiology . In 1971 he became a lecturer, in 1972 an adjunct professor, and in 1973 scientific advice and professor.

From 1978 to 1986 he headed the department for experimental epilepsy research at the Physiological Institute of the University of Münster, from 1986 until his retirement (2005) he was professor for neurophysiology and from 1987 managing director of the Institute for Physiology at the University of Münster.

Speckmann was, inter alia, 1974–1975 and 1988–1989 President of the German EEG Society (since 1996: German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging ; DGKN); 1985–1987 chairman of the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy (since 2004: German Society for Epileptology [DGfE]) and 1995 first chairman of the German Physiological Society .

From 1988 to 1998 he was editor of the Epilepsy Journal together with Dieter Scheffner (Berlin) and Peter Wolf (Bielefeld-Bethel) . Newsletter and magazine of the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy published by Bethel-Verlag, Bielefeld, as the forerunner of today's magazine for epileptology of the DGfE.

In addition to his scientific work, he works as a painter and sculptor.
