Jürgen Hescheler

Jürgen Hescheler (born May 2, 1959 in Saarbrücken ) is a German physiologist and stem cell researcher . He is director of the Institute for Neurophysiology at the University of Cologne.

Life

In 1978 Hescheler became the national winner in the field of mathematics / computer science at Jugend forscht . After graduating from high school, Hescheler studied medicine at the Saarland University from 1978 to 1984 . He then became a research assistant at the 2nd Physiological Institute and completed his habilitation at the same university in 1988. Until 1993, he was a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin. In 1994 Hescheler became professor and director of the Institute for Neurophysiology at the University Clinic in Cologne.

In 2004 he founded the German Society for Stem Cell Research and is its president. He received an honorary doctorate from Tongji Medical University in Wuhan in 2009. In 2012 he was appointed coordinator of the European Detective consortium ("Detection of endpoints and biomarkers of repeated dose toxicity using in vitro systems").
