The German Society for Epileptology eV (DGfE) is the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), a specialist society for professionals with a professional focus on the treatment or care of people with epilepsy .

Although the DGfE is an independent medical society , it is currently one of seven priority societies under the umbrella of the German Society for Neurology (DGN). The office of the DGfE has its seat in Berlin in shared office with the DGN.

Several working groups work under the umbrella of the DGfE. B. the 1993 (as a working group for presurgical epilepsy diagnostics and operative epilepsy surgery) founded "Working Group for Epilepsy Surgery", the "Working Group Genetics" founded in 2013 or the "Young Epileptologists" founded in 2015.

Currently (as of October 2017) the DGfE has around 1,500 members. These are predominantly neurologists (and neurologists ) and paediatricians (mostly neuropediatricians ), as well as psychologists and social workers as well as some neurosurgeons , neuroradiologists , neuropharmacologists and general practitioners and veterinarians. In addition, there are legal, corporate as well as corresponding and honorary members, including self-help organizations.

aims

Like the ILAE, the association pursues its goals

  • the further development and dissemination of knowledge about epilepsy,
  • the promotion of research, education and training,
  • improving services and care for patients, especially prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

history

The society or its predecessor organization was first founded in 1909 at the same time as the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) with initially only 10 national sections. As a result, there were interruptions in their activity both by the First and especially by the Second World War. Afterwards, at the suggestion of the American neurologist and epileptologist William Gordon Lennox (as early as 1953), a new foundation was discussed at the board meeting of the Association of German Neurologists on June 14, 1957 in Baden-Baden and on June 25, 1957 in the general assembly with initially 54 members and the election of Gerhard Schorsch as chairman. Dieter Janz was elected deputy chairman and Rudolf Dreyer as secretary and treasurer. On July 25, 1957, on the occasion of the International Neurology Congress in Brussels, the ILAE was accepted; the first conference took place on September 18, 1958 in Bethel.

In 2004 the name was changed to the current name.

Act

Infopool epilepsy

This internet-based offer provides extensive information for people with epilepsy and their relatives, but also for other people working in the health care system, in order to get an overview of epilepsy. The DGfE cooperates with other organizations with the aim of providing better information to the public such as the German Epilepsy Association (gem. EV), the Epilepsy Federal Parents' Association (gem. EV) ebe as supraregional interest groups for epilepsy self-help, the Michael Foundation or the association "Social work in epilepsy" eV

Statements on current issues

The organization regularly publishes statements on current topics such as new drugs, active ingredients that are still being tested such as cannabidiol (CBD), precautionary measures for known active ingredients such as valproic acid or the importance of genetic diagnostics in epilepsy.

Certificate in Epileptology

In 1982, the DGfE introduced certification for doctors who work with a special focus and proven expertise in the field of epileptology in practice or in hospitals. Requirements for the acquisition of the "Certificate Epileptology" are

Regular participation in advanced training events is required to receive the certificate.

The Epileptology Certificate is a quality criterion that can also serve as an orientation aid for patients.

Annual meetings

The society organizes regular annual meetings at which science and advanced training are imparted in a wide-ranging form, every two years as a "three-country conference" together with the Austrian Society for Epileptology and the Swiss Epilepsy League. The advanced training academy has become an important part of the annual meetings.

Session 17 coincided with the 7th International ILAE / IBE Symposia.

The conference No. 24 was a joint conference with the Society for Neuropediatrics.

In 1985 the annual conference was canceled because the Society held the 16th International Epilepsy Congress that year together with the ILAE and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) in Hamburg.

Session 33 was held jointly with the Italian League Against Epilepsy.

Conferences 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55, 57 and 59 were or are three-country conferences together with the Austrian Society for Epileptology and the Swiss Epilepsy League.

Conference No. 46 was held jointly with the French League Against Epilepsy.

Conference No. 48 was held parallel to the 8th European Epilepsy Congress (EEC) organized by the DGfE together with the Israeli League Against Epilepsy in Berlin.

Promotion of young talent, scholarships, prizes and awards

The company awards grants for the promotion of young talent, clinical and scientific training, as well as prizes and awards.

Promotion of young talent for participation in the congress

The DGfE supports the participation of younger domestic and foreign doctors and academic staff up to the age of 35 at its annual conference with a grant of 350 euros (to be applied for from the treasurer). Active participation in the congress (poster presentation or scientific contribution) is a prerequisite for funding.

In addition, grants for 5 young participants are available for selected advanced training events (e.g. summer schools) (to be applied for by the organizers).

Trial course in epileptology

The DGfE supports (near) specialists in neurology or neuropediatrics with a proportionate assumption of travel and ancillary costs and a loss of earnings of up to 2,000 euros per month for a maximum of two months, so that they can get an insight into epileptology. The prerequisite is the employer's promise that he will release the person for this time and then continue to employ them.

Otfrid Foerster Scholarship

Since 2008, the DGfE has been awarding scholarships named after the German neurologist, neurosurgeon and epileptologist of the same name, one of the pioneers in stimulating the cortex to localize epileptogenic foci and their surgical treatment, for individuals with up to half the funding of personnel costs for a period of up to one Year and an amount of now a maximum of € 40,000 with the aim of linking theoretical and clinical medicine. The prerequisite for funding is that the previous employer or another institution takes over the other half of the funding. The funds can be awarded by clinically active doctors for a theoretical project as well as by theoretical-scientific doctors for a clinical project.

Previous recipients:

  • 2017 Verena Gauß (Berlin)
  • 2016 Matthias Wawra (Berlin)
  • 2014 Julie Blumberg (Freiburg), Iren Orosz (Lübeck) and Derek Ott (Berlin)
  • 2011 Mareike Nowak (Erlangen)
  • 2009 Rainer Surges (London / Bonn) and Florian Weißinger (Berlin)
  • 2008 Sarah von Spiczak (Kiel)

Otfrid Foerster Medal

The Otfrid Foerster Medal has been awarded at irregular intervals by the DGfE since 2004 as an award for the life's work of people within society who have given epileptology a defining face. The awardees receive a certificate and a medal.

Previous recipients:

Alfred Hauptmann Prize

This award is named after the German neurologist and psychiatrist Alfred Hauptmann (1881–1948), who u. a. as early as 1912 - still as an assistant doctor - he first drew attention to the anti-epileptic effects of phenobarbital . In 1935, due to his Jewish descent, the National Socialists removed him from his position as director of the Psychiatric and Mental Clinic at the University of Halle an der Saale and had to emigrate to the USA. The prize has been a joint prize of the DGfE, the Austrian Society for Epileptology (ÖGfE) and the Swiss Epilesy League (SEL) since 2009 and is awarded every two years. From 1980 to 2008 it was usually awarded every two years by the Epilepsie-Kuratorium eV.

The prize is now endowed with € 10,000, and the winners also receive a certificate. The award is given to the best scientific work from the German-speaking region in the field of experimental and clinical epileptology from the two previous years.

Award winners since 2009 are:

  • 2019 Hajo Hamer and Johannes Lang (Erlangen) and Karel Kostev (Frankfurt)
  • 2017 Carola Haas (Freiburg) as well as Gian Marco de Marchi (Basel) and Deborah Pugin (Geneva)
