Peter Röttgen

Peter Röttgen (born February 8, 1910 in Euskirchen , † December 20, 1995 in Bonn ) was a German neurosurgeon .

Life

After studying medicine , he completed his specialist training in surgery in Bonn. From 1934 to 1937 he was a student of Wilhelm Tönnis in Würzburg and Berlin, and in 1938 he returned to Bonn. In the years from 1939 to 1945, various hospital activities followed. At the same time , Röttgen completed his habilitation in Bonn in 1943 with a thesis on surgery of peripheral nerves and then headed a neurosurgical department of the surgical clinic, which was initially housed in the neurological clinic.

Because of his membership in the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) and the Schutzstaffel (SS) (from 1933) after the Second World War, he initially only received temporary employment contracts as an assistant on the instructions of the military government. After denazification (Cat. V), also due to the advocacy of colleagues (including dean Otto Ulrich ), he was soon again senior physician in the neurosurgical department of the University Surgical Clinic in Bonn. In 1950 he became an adjunct professor and from 1954 headed the independent clinic for neurosurgery, from 1962 to 1978 as a full professor and chair holder. His successor was Rolf Wüllenweber (1924–2000).

Röttgen was chairman of the German section of the ILAE from 1963 to 1965 (since 2004: German Society for Epileptology ). In 1978 he was awarded honorary membership of the German Society for Neurosurgery and in 1978 received its Fedor Krause Medal .
