Raffaele Canger

Raffaele Canger (born December 26, 1938 in Jerusalem , League of Nations mandate for Palestine ; † March 18, 2019 ) was an Italian neurologist and psychiatrist , clinical neurophysiologist and epileptologist .

Life

Canger came from a medical family, a great-grandfather was a surgeon in Napoleon's army during the Russian campaign , a grandfather was one of the first Italian psychiatrists, and his father was a surgeon and chief physician of the Italian Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel. Canger studied medicine in Milan, where he also began his specialist training, initially in psychiatry, by 1963. From 1964 to 1966 he was at the Neurological University Clinic in Heidelberg in Germany (with Dieter Janz ).

In 1967 Canger became a specialist in psychiatry and in 1969 a specialist in neurological and mental diseases. From 1967 to 1982 he was Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and from 1983 Associated Professor at the Department of Neurology at the University of Milan. In 1984 he received a professorship for clinical neurophysiology and from 1986 was head of the Regional Epilepsy Center at the Santa Paolo Hospital in Milan.

From 1990 to 1993 Canger was President of the Italian Chapter (Lega Italiana contro l'Epilessia: LICE) of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and founding editor of its magazine. From 1985 to 1889 he was a member of the "Committee on Epilepsy, Genetics, Pregnancy and the Child" and from 1989 to 1993 of the "Commission on Epilepsy Genetics, Pregnancy and the Child" of the ILAE.
