Hanfried Helmchen

Hanfried Helmchen (born June 12, 1933 ) is a German university professor ; from 1971 to 1999 he was professor of psychiatry at the Free University of Berlin ; since 1999 Professor Emeritus .

Life

Hanfried Helmchen studied medicine in Berlin and Heidelberg from 1950 to 1955 and received his doctorate in 1956 with a dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. In 1965 he came to the FU Psychiatric Clinic as a senior physician, where he completed his habilitation in 1967 . From 1971 he was director of the psychiatric clinic at the Free University of Berlin. Helmchen published in international journals, his areas of work included epilepsy , depression, therapy research, mental disorders in old age and dementia ; Helmchen took part in the Berlin age study . He was u. a. from 1973 to 1975 chairman of the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy (since 2004: German Society for Epileptology),

Helmchen was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1993 . He was a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and an advisor to the World Health Organization . From 1983 to 1994 he headed the ethics committee of the Virchowklinikum and the ethics committee of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry and is a member of the Academy for Ethics in Medicine .

Research and Teaching

Hanfried Helmchen researched depression , among other things , and dealt with the methodology of psychiatric therapy research and questions of medical ethics. In 2006, in collaboration with Hans Lauter , Siegried Kanowski and Eva-Maria Neumann, he published the standard work Ethics in geriatric medicine .
