Academy for Ethics in Medicine

The Academy for Ethics in Medicine e. V. (AEM) is an interdisciplinary and interprofessional society for medical ethics with headquarters and offices in Göttingen .

The association was founded in 1986. Its members include doctors, nurses, philosophers and theologians. According to the company's own presentation, the goal is

"To promote public as well as scientific discourse on ethical questions in medicine, nursing and health care and to stand up for the interests of the subject of medical ethics."

The main areas of work include the implementation of conferences and symposia, the publication of the journal Ethik in der Medizin , the promotion of young scientists and the qualification of people who work in clinical ethics counseling.

In 1992, the Information and Documentation Center for Ethics in Medicine (IDEM) was set up at the office. This provides advice on the search for specialist literature, produces the literature database ETHMED and is involved in the establishment and further development of online offers on medical and bioethics at national and international level. IDEM is now managed in cooperation with the Department of Ethics and History of Medicine at Göttingen University Medical Center.

The association is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies and the European Association of Centers of Medical Ethics .
