Hans-Bernhard Wuermeling

Hans-Bernhard Wuermeling (born February 6, 1927 in Berlin-Schöneberg ; † January 31, 2019 in Erlangen ) was a German forensic doctor and expert on bioethical issues. He was married to Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz until his death . His father was the first Federal Family Minister in Germany, Franz-Josef Wuermeling (Cabinet Adenauer II , III , IV ).

Life

Hans-Bernhard Wuermeling studied medicine in Tübingen and Marburg. There he received his doctorate in 1952. He completed his assistantship in Marburg and Freiburg. After his habilitation in 1956, he was appointed senior assistant and then professor. In 1973 he was appointed head of the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , where he was until his retirement in 1995.

Wuermeling mainly worked in alcohol psychology and traffic accident reconstruction as well as on professional law and bioethical issues such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or living wills.

In 2009, Wuermeling was the first to sign the Marburg Declaration “For freedom and self-determination - against totalitarian efforts by lesbian and gay associations” .

In 2012 Wuermeling was awarded the Paracelsus Medal , the highest honor awarded by the German medical profession.

Honorary positions

From 1982 to 1986 he was Vice President in the self-administration of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and from 1986 to 1988 President of the Academy for Ethics in Medicine .

Hans Bernhard Wuermeling acted in an advisory capacity on many committees. These include the scientific advisory board of the German Medical Association and the AIDS advisory board of the federal government. Wuermeling chaired the ethics committee of the Bavarian State Medical Association. He was a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Institute for Youth and Society (DIJG) and the scientific advisory board of the European Academy for Culture and Society .
