Rupprecht Thorbecke

Hans Rup (p) right Thorbecke (born November 5, 1943 in Leipzig ) is a German medical sociologist with special epilepsy expertise.

Life

From 1964 to 1966 Thorbecke first studied medicine in Freiburg and Berlin, then after completing the preliminary physics from 1967 to 1972 to study sociology, economics and psychology in Munich and Konstanz (master’s degree). From 1972 to 1975 he was a member of Frieder Naschold's public health research group at the University of Konstanz , where he participated in studies on the influence of environmental conditions on heart disease and in his first publications.

From 1975 to 1990 he was a research assistant at the Department of Neurology at the Free University of Berlin , Klinikum Charlottenburg (with Dieter Janz ).

From 1990 to 2007 Thorbecke was head of the “Department for General Rehabilitation” at the Mara Clinic of the Bethel Epilepsy Center (with Peter Wolf , who had previously moved from Berlin to Bielefeld) and from 1997 to 2007 together with the neurologist, psychiatrist, epileptologist and Rehabilitation physician Ulrich Specht head of the newly established clinical department for epilepsy rehabilitation.

He has been officially retired since 2008 (Ingrid Coban was his successor), but is still active.

Work and writings

During his time in Berlin, Thorbecke a. a. In 1977, together with patients and doctors, the first epilepsy self-help group (SHG) was founded in Germany. In 1978, together with this SHG, he founded the magazine “einfalls”, which has since developed into the national platform for the development of self-help in the field of epilepsy and in which he also wrote numerous articles. Between 1977 and 1990 he was also involved in many evolving epilepsy self-help activities at the national level, including a. in the founding of the umbrella organization "German Epilepsy Association" (DE) and the organization of annual meetings. From 1982 he was together with Gisela Schüler co-organizer of the biennial workshops “Social Work in Epilepsy” and co-editor of the corresponding volumes of reports.

In Bielefeld-Bethel Thorbecke u. a. significantly involved in the development of rehabilitation concepts for patients with epilepsy, including those following epilepsy surgery. Together with Theo May and Margret Pfäfflin , he developed research instruments for assessing the psychosocial situation and quality of life in epilepsy.

Since the 1980s Thorbecke has also been a member of a joint working group for the professional rehabilitation of people with epilepsy of the German Society for Epileptology, representatives of the statutory accident insurance and occupational physicians of large companies. The corresponding recommendations are updated regularly and are now also a legal standard.

Thorbecke was also a member of the management group for the patient training program MOSES and (co-) author of the program (1st edition 1998, 2nd edition 2005). From 1998 to 2015, together with Dieter Dennig, he was responsible for adapting the program in non-German-speaking countries (Japan, Lithuania, Czech Republic, United Kingdom).

Another scientific focus was compliance research. Thorbecke's further activities at national and international level existed and still exist. a. in:

  • 1985 Member of the Scientific Committee of the 16th International Epilepsy Congress in Hamburg with responsibility for the topic of self-help including international cooperation
  • 1987 Member of the organizing committee of the first international epilepsy self-help workshop in Heeze, Netherlands
  • 1979–2000 member of the German Epilepsy Board of Trustees and co-author of the first (1985) and second (1998) German epilepsy report (responsible for the psychosocial aspects) as well as development of the concept of the “Information Center Epilepsy” (IZE), which began its work in 1991
  • 1986–91 member of the first “Employment Commission” of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) with (co-) authorship of publications
  • Member of other IBE commissions such as “Epilepsy, Risks and Insurance” also as a co-organizer of 2 workshops, co-author of several publications (one in the Epilepsy - center Bethel) and co-author of several publications.
  • since 1995 board member of the Michael Foundation with (co-) authorship of several brochures and publications of the foundation
