Heinz (Heinrich) Josef Penin (* 29. November 1924 in Trier ) is a German neurologist , epilepsy specialist and emeritus professors .

Life

After studying medicine in Bonn and Freiburg, Penin completed his specialist training from 1954 in Bonn with Hans Jörg Weitbrecht , supplemented by EEG training from 1957 to 1958 in Freiburg with Richard Jung .

In 1965 he qualified as a professor for neurology and psychiatry in Bonn and became a senior physician at the university mental hospital there . In 1969 he was appointed adjunct professor and in 1970 head of the newly created department for clinical neurophysiology and experimental neuropsychiatry .

In 1975 Penin was initially acting director of the Bonn University Psychiatric Clinic and from 1978 onwards, after its division, first holder of a chair in epileptology in Germany and the first ever in Europe. As a result, he carefully and sustainably expanded the clinic, including the planning of the new building that his successor would then move into. In 1990 Penin retired and Christian E. Elger was appointed as his successor .

A central aspect of the clinical and scientific work of Penin was the introduction and continuous further development of the recording of epileptic seizures with simultaneous EEG registration (simultaneous video / double image recording). As early as 1965, a network for magnetic tape recordings was installed on the wards and in a studio in the Bonn clinic. Image mixing systems made it possible for the first time to record the clinical and bioelectrical phenomena of seizures with two or more (at that time still television) cameras synchronously and then to submit them to a detailed analysis. This resulted in the possibility of an exact differential typology of epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. So could u. a. not only the international classification of epileptic seizures, but also the preoperative diagnosis can be significantly improved.

Penin was the author of numerous articles in German and foreign language journals and books. He was also the (co-) editor and co-author of books.

From 1968 to 1969 he was President of the German EEG Society (since 1996: German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging ; DGKN) and from 1971 to 1973 Chairman of the German Section of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE; since 2004: German Society for Epileptology ; DGfE). In addition, he was u. a. Initiator and speaker of the first funding program for epilepsy research of the German Research Foundation .
