In addition to clinical syndromology, Doose's main focus was on the long-term course of patients with epilepsy and clinical genetics with the detection and description of genetic forms of epilepsy on the basis of extensive family examinations, including genetically determined variants in the electroencephalogram (EEG).

For the first time he described several forms of epilepsy in children and adolescents.

In addition to numerous magazine and book articles, Doose was also a (co-) author and (co-) editor of specialist books. His self-published textbook Epilepsies in Children and Adolescents , first published in 1967, was considered a standard work in German-speaking countries for many years . In 1973 he was co-author of an epilepsy memorandum of the German Research Foundation and in the 1970s (co-) editor of several congress and conference reports.
