Günter Rabending

Günter Rabending (born June 6, 1931 in Dresden ) is a German neurologist and epileptologist as well as an emeritus university professor .

life and work

After studying medicine at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald from 1949 to 1954, Rabending completed his specialist training from 1956 to 1959 in Rostock and Dresden. 1959 followed the EEG training and a three-month activity at the department for clinical neurophysiology of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg with Richard Jung . From 1960 to 1973 he was a senior physician at the Psychiatric Clinic of the Medical Academy Magdeburg with the management of the department for clinical neurophysiology, in 1961 he founded an epilepsy outpatient clinic. Rabending completed his habilitation in 1965 and was appointed lecturer in neurology and psychiatry in 1966 . In 1970 he was appointed full professor of neurology and psychiatry at the Magdeburg Medical Academy. In 1973 he was appointed full professor for neurology and psychiatry at the University of Greifswald and in 1974 as director of the university clinic for neurology and psychiatry in Greifswald . Under his leadership, the Greifswalder Nervenklinik developed into the leading epilepsy center in the GDR with a supra-regional special outpatient department and a broad range of scientific publications.

In 1991 he resigned from his position as clinic director prematurely and worked for several years as a resident neurologist in Greifswald.

From 1975 to 1991 Rabending was head of the EEG training courses at the Academy for Medical Training in the GDR (with Hannelore Zettler , Berlin), from 1976 to 1983 chairman of the Society for Neuroelectrodiagnostics in the GDR and from 1983 to 1990 chairman of the epilepsy section of the GDR in the International League against epilepsy ( English International League against epilepsy , ILAE).

One of his students and later head of the epilepsy department in Greifswald is the neurologist and epileptologist Uwe Runge . Together with this he developed the electronic seizure calendar Epivista, which was widely used in the North German Epilepsy Center for children and adolescents in Raisdorf .
