Life

After completing secondary school, Holthausen first completed an apprenticeship as a banker and then worked in this profession for several years. After successfully completing his high school diploma, he first studied human medicine in Bonn and then in Munich . During his studies, he decided on paediatrics and did his doctorate at the Dr. von Haunersche Children's Hospital in Munich. After the state examination, he began his clinical training in anesthesia at the Wolfratshausen district hospital, but after just one year he got a job at the von Hauner's Children's Clinic in Munich, where he soon concentrated on epileptology .

Hans Erich Boenigk was able to persuade him to move to Bethel after the establishment of an epilepsy surgical program had been decided there under the direction of Peter Wolf and Hans O. Lüders . After an EEG fellowship and training in presurgical diagnostics at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland in Ohio, USA (with Lüders), Holthausen was head physician in the department for preoperative epilepsy diagnostics at the Bethel Epilepsy Center in Bielefeld from 1990 to 1998 (initially alone, then together with Ingrid Tuxhorn for the children's area and Alois Ebner and Soheyl Noachtar for the adult area).

From 1998 to 2010, Holthausen was the successor to Michael Laub, who died early, as chief physician at the Clinic for Neuropediatrics and Neurological Rehabilitation, Epilepsy Center for Children and Adolescents, Day Clinic for Neuropediatrics at the Vogtareuth Treatment Center , where he also set up the preoperative diagnostics.
