The Evangelical Hospital Bethel (EvKB; until March 2017 Lutheran Hospital Bielefeld) is a German hospital of maximum care in Bielefeld . Together with the Bielefeld Clinic and the Lippe Clinic , the EvKB will form the University Clinic OWL of the Medical Faculty of Ostwestfalen-Lippe , which is currently being established.

history

The partners of the hospital are the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel (97 percent) and the Evangelical Johanneswerk (3 percent), the two largest diaconal institutions in Europe. The Mara hospital gGmbH with the epilepsy clinics of the Bethel Epilepsy Center and the Center for Disabled Medicine is a sister company of the Bethel Evangelical Clinic. It is a specialist hospital of the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel. The management and all other responsibilities within the administration lie with the EvKB.

In the classification according to the hospital plan of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the EvKB (including the Mara hospital) is a top regional care facility with a total of around 1,755 (EvKB: 1,555, Mara 200) inpatient beds plus day-care and outpatient offers. It has 24 bed-managing specialist departments, three occupational departments and four institutes. The houses achieved a turnover of 213 million euros in 2007 (EvKB 189 million euros, Mara 24 million euros). According to current calculations, in 2008 it was 223 million euros (EvKB 198 million euros, Mara 25 million euros). The number of inpatients treated in 2007 was 50,300 cases (number of cases), in 2008 51,115 cases and in 2015 56,997 cases. It is also the largest Protestant acute hospital in Germany.

The house has been selected as a contract hospital by the British Department of Defense and is responsible for the medical care of the British armed forces and their relatives in the region. The EvKB and the Mara Hospital employ a total of around 4,600 people. 475 doctors and nearly 1,600 trained nurses make up the largest professional groups. There are also 385 trainees in nursing, geriatric nurses and nursing assistants. Around 200 employees work in housekeeping. A large part of the facilities is located in the Gadderbaum district of Bielefeld in the village of Bethel . Another central location is the Johannesstift in Bielefeld- Schildesche . Some small units are decentralized in the city area.

The EvKB trains budding physicians: the clinic is an academic teaching hospital of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster, and from 2011 to 2016 it was also the teaching hospital of the University of Pécs (Hungary). The EvKB also works with Bielefeld University in the field of health sciences and clinical linguistics . The hospital trains with the health schools in the areas of nursing (from 2020 generalized care), medical-technical radiology assistance (MTRA), occupational therapy and dietetic assistance.

The EvKB itself is in turn the majority shareholder in the following subsidiaries :

  • Medical care center Bielefeld at EvKB GmbH, Bielefeld
  • Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation GmbH (ZAR Bielefeld), Bielefeld

In 2006 the hospital made a loss of 3.6 million euros, whereupon on June 20, 2007 the chief executive officer Franz Streyl was "removed from office with immediate effect" by the supervisory board. The former managing director could no longer be trusted, as Streyl could not have managed the financial management of the new large clinic. Later, however, the "lasting merits" were also mentioned and that Streyl had "significantly helped to ensure the high reputation of the hospital among the population and the professional world".

On September 1, 2007, Heiner Meyer zu Lösebeck was hired as his successor. His task was to bring the clinic back into the black within three years and brought the EvKB to a result of plus 4 million euros in 2010.

In January 2012, Rainer Norden was named managing director of the EvKB. The businessman has been working for v. Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel and is responsible for business administration / finances on the Bethel board.

The hospital has been operating as the Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB) since March 1, 2017.

In January 2019, Maren Thäter (Chair) and Matthias Ernst were appointed as managing directors of the EvKB. Matthias Ernst is chairman of the Mara hospital. The previous managing director, Rainer Norden, moved to the hospital's supervisory board as chairman. In June 2020, Maren Thäter left the management.

Neurocenter

The neurocenter in the EvKB treats interdisciplinary diseases of the nerves, muscles and the brain. Well known is the Bethel Epilepsy Center, the core of which is formed by the epilepsy clinics for children and adults in the Mara Specialist Hospital. Epilepsy is treated both conservatively and surgically here. The Clinic for Neurosurgery of the EvKB has a share in this. The EvKB with its locations Johannesstift and Bethel (house Gilead I) ensures the supply in the field of neurology for the city of Bielefeld and the surrounding area. Two certified stroke units - stroke stations - are available for emergency care. Neuroradiology and neuropathology provide the necessary diagnostic knowledge.

Perinatal Center Bielefeld (Level 1)

In autumn 2009 an intensive care unit for premature babies was opened in house Gilead I after the corresponding renovation work. It is spatially directly connected to the delivery room of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics and, in cooperation with it, the Clinic for Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Anesthesiology at the EvKB, forms a perinatal center of the highest level of care (Level 1). In this network, high-risk pregnancies and births are cared for in Bielefeld and in the entire region.

Tumor Center Bielefeld

The Bielefeld Tumor Center in the EvKB treats cancer patients in an interdisciplinary manner in all age groups. It was certified as an interdisciplinary oncological center by the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology eV (DGHO) in March 2011. Thanks to the integrated palliative medical and oncological care, the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has accredited the Clinic for Internal Medicine, Hematology / Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Palliative Medicine as a center.

Children's Center Bethel

The Bethel Children's Center brings together four clinics, the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, the Clinic for Pediatric Surgery, the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, and the Department for Pediatric Radiology. The Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine treats more than 10,000 inpatients every year. This makes it one of the largest children's clinics in Germany. A new building for the children's center in the EvKB will be built between 2019 and 2022.

Bielefeld against cancer

In September 2014, the Evangelical Clinic Bethel (EvKB) and Bielefeld against cancer launched a broad-based educational concept about cancer . Its aim is to convey long-term and, in particular, sustainable knowledge on the topic to the public and thus to achieve better therapeutic options for patients through earlier diagnoses. The hospital cooperates with companies from Bielefeld and the region.
