Heinz-Joachim Meencke

Heinz-Joachim Meencke (born July 22, 1945 ) is a German neurologist and psychiatrist and professor of neurology with a focus on epileptology .

life and work

After studying medicine and sociology in Berlin and Heidelberg, Meencke was initially a research assistant in neuroanatomy (Graf Keyserlingk), FU Berlin, from 1975 to 1977. a. 1991 Meencke received a call to a C3 professor for neurology at the Klinikum Charlottenburg of the Free University of Berlin , from 1994 Klinikum Rudolf Virchow, Charite / Humboldt University. There establishment of a department for preoperative epilepsy diagnostics and development of the epilepsy surgery program together with Wolfgang Lanksch, neurosurgical department. 1996 Establishment of an independent institute for preoperative epilepsy diagnostics with a settlement at the Evangelical Hospital Queen Elisabeth Herzberge (KEH), Berlin, under a contractual relationship with the Charite. From 1996 to 2011 chief physician of the epileptology department, managing partner and senior physician of the institute and medical director of the Epilepsy Center Berlin, from 2001 Berlin-Brandenburg.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Epilepsy Center developed the complex treatment of epilepsy taking into account somatic, psychiatric, neuropsychological and social aspects of the disease. In order to promote this, cooperation agreements were concluded with rehabilitation clinics, vocational training centers, pension providers, employment offices and institutions for professional integration.

From 2002 deputy medical director of the hospital, from 2010 one of the managing directors of the MVZ at the KEH, with an epilepsy ambulance.

The development of the holistic treatment of epilepsy and the development of epilepsy surgery were a focus of Meencke's clinical work. Since the 1980s, Meencke's neuropathological work in the field of epileptology, based on the work of Veith, again focused on the importance of developmental disorders of the brain for the development of epilepsy. The epilepsy surgery made it possible to investigate basic physiological phenomena of epilepsy in cooperation with institutes for basic research of the Charite.
