Ansgar Matthes

Ansgar Matthes (born March 9, 1924 , † February 15, 2008 in Kehl-Kork) was a German neuropediatrician and epileptologist .

Life

After studying medicine in Berlin, Würzburg and Heidelberg, Matthes passed the state examination there in 1951 and received his doctorate. From 1952 he was a research assistant at the Heidelberg University Children's Clinic, where he set up and managed the epilepsy outpatient clinic and EEG department from 1955 to 1965. 1959-1960 followed a stay abroad at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with the US neurologist and epileptologist William Gordon Lennox .

After his return, Matthes completed his habilitation in 1960 in Heidelberg for pediatrics ("Psychomotor Epilepsy in Childhood").

In 1964 he became a senior physician at what was then the “Korker Anstalten” in Kehl-Kork with the subsequent development and expansion of the Kehl-Kork Epilepsy Center into a modern model facility, from 1969 together with the neuropediatrician and epileptologist Rolf Kruse .

Matthes was among other things chairman of the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE; since 2004: German Society for Epileptology , DGfE).

In 1985 he retired.

Matthes was a "pioneer of German pediatric epileptology". In addition to numerous articles in magazines and books, he was (co-) author and (co-) editor of several books and brochures in the field of neuropediatrics and epilepsy, including an epilepsy patient guide:

  • 1971: Michael Prize from the Michael Foundation
  • 1979: "Ambassador for Epilepsy" by the ILAE and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE)
  • 1985: Honorary membership of the German section of the ILAE (since 2004 German Society for Epileptology)
