He completed his habilitation in econometrics at the Vienna University of Technology . Since 1988 he has been Professor of Economic and Social Statistics at the Technical University of Dortmund. He was also a visiting professor at the Management Institute of Fudan University in Shanghai .

Since 2008, Krämer has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the Arts .

He is also a member of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP) and was a member of the Association's Science Council.

Walter Krämer is married and has two children.

Criticism of the euro bailout policy

In 2012, Krämer initiated an appeal on the euro crisis, which was signed by more than 270 university professors. The professors, including the head of the Ifo Institute, Hans-Werner Sinn , declared the federal government's euro bailout policy to be a failure. Instead of tax-financed bank bailouts, they called for bank creditors to be held liable for their debts. In the run-up to the 2013 federal election , Krämer gave an assessment of the AfD in an interview with the magazine Junge Freiheit in view of the criticized euro bailout policy .

Plagiarism allegation

After a charge of taz , in 2002 at the calibration fount publishing house published book Lexicon of Cities insults plagiarized to have the publishing compensated retrospectively 30 authors of the original bleakness places for the acquired unmarked passages with a fee and agreed with the damaged publishers Reclam , Hoffmann and Campe and Suhrkamp . According to its own statements, the taz also received a fee plus an infringement surcharge. Before the regional court in Berlin , Krämer lost his lawsuit against the daily newspaper . In the opinion of the court, the author did not use the term “straightforward plagiarism” in the legal sense, but made a journalistically permissible assessment.

Controversy about showcases at the TU Dortmund

In December 2019, the AStA of the TU Dortmund published a statement in which Krämer's notices in his showcase at the TU Dortmund (including quotations from Adolf Hitler and Hans-Olaf Henkel) were sharply criticized. In its statement, the AStA also referred to Krämer's involvement in the controversial German Language Association , as well as to a number of right-wing populist statements by Krämer. After the rectorate of the TU Dortmund did not want to comment publicly on the notices for months, rector Ursula Gather finally distanced herself from the Hitler quote, which she described as "tasteless". At the same time, she referred to the freedom of expression that these notices would cover. On December 17th, the construction and facility management of the TU Dortmund announced that Krämer's showcase had "impermissibly narrowed" the escape and rescue route and therefore had to be moved a few meters behind a glass door.
