Lexicon of errors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term error lexicon can be used to summarize a genre of popular scientific non-fiction books that have been common since the mid-1990s and that deal with widespread misconceptions and legends and claim to correct them. It was named after the Lexicon of Popular Errors by Walter Krämer and Götz Trenkler , published by Eichborn Verlag in 1996 . A forerunner of the “mistaken literature” was Nobody laughed at Columbus. Forgeries and legends of history corrected by the historian and ZEIT author Gerhard Prause from 1966.

This was followed by a number of other “lexicons” on a variety of subject areas. In 1999 Eichborn-Verlag published the Lexicon of Classical Errors , which shows when which scientists and institutions made (alleged) errors. Also in 1999 came the lexicon of counterfeits of Werner Fuld , also at calibration fount out and extended the errors to "forgeries, lies and conspiracies of art, history, science and literature." In 2000, the lexicon of psychological errors by science journalist Rolf Degen in Eichborn-Verlag followed.

The titles Lexicon of legal errors ( Ullstein Verlag , 2004) and New Lexicon of legal errors (Ullstein-Verlag, 2005) by lawyer Ralf Höcker became bestsellers. Höcker's second work sparked worldwide media coverage in the summer of 2005 after the author first made it clear in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian that tourists do not have a legal right to use a sun lounger if they reserve it with a towel.

In the context of films such as The Passion of the Christ and bestsellers such as The Da Vinci Code , error lexicons with biblical themes also became popular. The Protestant theologian Walter-Jörg Langbein used his knowledge of the ancient languages and theological secondary literature to present controversial topics of the Old and New Testaments in the Lexicon of Biblical Errors and in the Lexicon of Errors in the New Testament .
