Gerhard Prause (born May 16, 1926 in Hamburg ; † December 2, 2004 ibid) was a German journalist , literary scholar and historian .

Life

Prause became known as the author of the time puzzle series Tratschke asks: Who was it? . The pseudonym Tratschke reminiscent of its last name of the Prussian House and Hofhistorikers Heinrich von Treitschke , of the educated middle class of the Empire and the Weimar period and also the early post-war period was very well known and whose name at that time literally for accurate historical factual knowledge (annual figures etc.) was standing.

Prause wrote numerous essays, television documentaries, and non-fiction books that have been translated into many languages. His 1966 work Nobody laughed at Columbus is one of the first to deal with the creation of legends in history (see also dictionary of errors ).
