Bastian Sick grew up in Ratekau near Lübeck and attended the Leibniz Gymnasium in Bad Schwartau . There he graduated from high school in 1984. After completing his military service , he studied history and Romance studies in Hamburg with a Magister Artium degree . During his studies he worked as a proofreader and translator for the Carlsen publishing house in Hamburg . this strongly influenced his feeling for spelling and punctuation. In 1995, Sick came to Spiegel-Verlag . There he first worked as a documentation journalist in the photo archive; In 1999 he joined the editorial team of Spiegel Online . From 2003 he became known as the author of the column onion fish , in which he treated doubtful cases of grammar, spelling, punctuation and style.

The book series Der Dativ ist das Genitive seine Tod , published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch , arose from the onion fish column . The onion fish was the first German internet column that became a bestseller in book form. In this series, six volumes were published from 2004 to 2015. The first three volumes had a total circulation of over three million copies by February 2007. In 2008, Sick published the book Happy Aua - A picture book from the maze of the German language, the first volume of another book series in which he presented selected linguistic curiosities. In 2017, the sixth Happy-Aua -Band was released under the title Hit the devil a bargain . Board and computer games as well as annual calendars and set-up books were also derived from the content of the book series The dative is the genitive being his death and the Happy-Aua books.

Sick has completed several reading tours in which he also appeared as an entertainer. On March 13, 2006, Sick held the “largest German lesson in the world” in front of 15,000 spectators in the Kölnarena . He was supported by Thomas Bug , Joachim Hermann Luger , Jürgen Rüttgers , Frank Plasberg , Frank Rost , Cordula Stratmann and Annette Frier , among others . Recordings of this event as well as recordings of his stage tours were published as audio books. In 2007, at the invitation of Sony-BMG , Sick released the CD Lieder full of poetry , a homage to the musician and singer Udo Jürgens .

In 2008, Sick briefly received his own television show on WDR . With artists such as Jochen Busse , Konrad Beikircher and Susanne Pätzold , Sick presented curiosities from everyday German language in three 30-minute programs. In 2009 Sick left Spiegel-Verlag and started his own business as an author and lecturer. In 2011 and 2012 he toured Germany with his program Nur aus Jux und Tolleranz . At the invitation of the Goethe Institute , the German Schools and similar educational institutions, Bastian Sick has also performed numerous appearances abroad, including in Montreal ( Canada ), Hungary , Spain , Portugal , South Tyrol ( Italy ), England and Egypt . In 2008 he went on a South America tour with eight appearances in six countries.

Bastian Sick lives and works in Hamburg and since 2014 in Niendorf ( Schleswig-Holstein ).

reception

Sicks books and columns are on the one hand perceived as entertaining and instructive and are sometimes used in school lessons. The fact that he is well received by a wide audience is often justified in the press by the fact that he can explain in an understandable and humorous way how German grammar works. On the other hand, Sick's books are criticized by linguists such as Peter Eisenberg , Theodor Ickler , Vilmos Ágel and Anatol Stefanowitsch , Rainer Wimmer and Ulrich Püschel as being too normative and sometimes factually incorrect. Sicks works are not suitable for school lessons. The linguist André Opinion published a book in which he systematically proves Bastian Sick's linguistic errors. After Karsten Rinas had described inconsistencies in this book, among others , Opinion published a revised version of the book. Claudius Seidl finds in his criticism in the FAZ : “ The onion fish stinks from the head. "

In Lower Saxony's core curriculum for upper secondary school from 2009, Sicks glosses were suggested as a possible reading for the compulsory module “Tendencies in Contemporary Language”, admittedly in connection with André Opiner's book, which sharply criticizes Sicks glosses from a linguistic point of view. These texts serve as examples for one of four “text groups” that can be dealt with in this module, namely “texts that depict the controversy between public and journalistic language criticism and linguistic positions”.
