The Econ Verlag , based in Berlin is an imprint of the publishing group Ullstein publishing houses GmbH , at the Swedish publishing group Bonnier since 2004 holds the majority of the company shares. The focus of the offer is the non-fiction book .

history

Econ Verlag was founded on November 25, 1950 in Düsseldorf by the Austrian publicist Erwin Barth von Wehrenalp , who was also able to persuade the publisher of the Handelsblatt , Friedrich Vogel , to bring in the second half of the starting capital of DM 10,000. As early as 1972, the balance sheet showed sales that were well over 14 million marks. Now von Wehrenalp has been able to remove the remaining 25% company shares from the Handelsblatt .

In 1981 the Schroedel Verlag , then the Rheinisch-Westfälische Verlagsgesellschaft , which is also involved in the newspaper group WAZ , acquired the publisher. From 1982 to 1997 Dietrich Oppenberg , the publisher of the regional newspaper NRZ , took over the management of the publishing house. A number of prominent politicians and journalists were now represented as authors at Econ Verlag (for example Helmut Schmidt , Oskar Lafontaine , and above all the journalist Walter Henkels , who held a lonely record with his 34 mostly anecdotal books about the Bonn scene).

From 1982 to 1987 Oppenberg and his personal assistant Hero Kind (1944-2018), whom he appointed as managing director, doubled the publisher's turnover to almost 30 million marks. In 1988 buchreport , the specialist magazine for the German book trade, described Econ as “the most successful German non-fiction book publisher”. It occupied twelve out of a hundred places on the Spiegel bestseller list; including the autobiography of Chrysler renovator Lee Iacocca at number one with almost half a million copies sold.

In the field of business literature, for which head editor Wolfgang Stock was responsible, the publishing house was one of the most prominent in Germany in the 80s and 90s. Authors included Peter F. Drucker , John Naisbitt , André Kostolany and Milton Friedman .

After Oppenberg left in 1997, the Econ group merged with List Verlag ; the company headquarters was relocated to Munich . In 1999, Axel Springer AG bought the majority of the shares and then operated under the direction of Christian Strasser as part of the Goethestrasse publishing group .

Notation

In the library catalog of the German National Library , the publisher's spelling for literature references is given both as “ECON” and “Econ”. In the catalog of the Austrian National Library only the spelling “Econ” is used.
