Rainer Köthe

Rainer Köthe (* 1948 in Hamburg ) is a journalist and self-employed author and co-author of around 80 mostly popular science books that have been translated into 31 languages.

Professional background

Born in Hamburg in 1948, Rainer Köthe studied and obtained his doctorate in chemistry and biochemistry from 1968 to 1980 at the University of Hamburg. In addition to studying chemistry, he worked intensively as a freelance journalist. a. for ZEIT, NDR and Naturwissenschaftliche Rundschau.

As science editor of the weekly magazine Stern at Verlag Gruner + Jahr , he began to write hundreds of articles from 1980 onwards on popular science topics. He also worked for Die Zeit and Atlas Verlag (50 articles in the "Third Reich" series). He also wrote several advertising brochures ("Salt" ( Solvay ), color printing ( Gruner & Jahr ), artificial intelligence ( digital equipment )).

From 1986 to 1999 he was editor-in-chief of the nature magazine kosmos . During this time he wrote a large number of articles. He is also the author and coauthor of numerous youth-fiction books in the series WHAT IS WHAT in publishing Ragnar Tessloff which is constantly updated reissued. He has also developed over 100 successful experiment kits for children , often together with Ruth Schildhauer .

For several years he was teaching journalism for the University of Hohenheim .

Awards

In 1996, Rainer Köthe received the author's award from Deutsche Umwelthilfe for his work as an author and journalist .

Private

As a six-year-old, Rainer Köthe was already very interested in the natural sciences and carried out his own experiments. Archimedes , Albert Einstein , Michael Faraday and Charles Darwin were named by him as exciting scientists. He is a member of the German Amateur Radio Club and worked as an honorary judge for five years at the administrative court in Karlsruhe.

Rainer Köthe was a long-time member of the city council in his place of residence Neckarbischofsheim , was in the Lions Club and sings in the choir. He is married and has a daughter and a son.
