The publishing house is based in Nuremberg

The Tessloff Verlag , based in Nuremberg, is best known for the children's non-fiction series Was ist was . He belongs to the media company Müller Medien .

history

On September 14, 1956, Ragnar Tessloff , a Hamburg publisher's son, founded the publishing house, initially under the name "Neuer Tessloff Verlag". From 1967 onwards it was published under the name Tessloff Verlag , with publications taking place under the old name ( Neuer Tessloff Verlag ) in parallel until 1971 .

First he published American comics such as Tom and Jerry or Lassie in German. During a trip through the USA he discovered the children's non-fiction book series How and Why and in 1959 concluded the first license agreements. From 1961 the series Was ist Was was offered on the German market - initially as a monthly magazine, then from 1963 as hardcover editions in bookshops. In the 1970s Tessloff published the phono fairy tale book series Das Sprechende Buch . At the end of the 1980s, the company was taken over by the Franconian Müller Medien Group, which was mainly active in the telephone directory business, and in 1989 relocated its headquarters from Hamburg to Nuremberg.

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .

Publishing program

The publisher's best-known brand is Was ist Was . Since the beginning of the new millennium, the publisher has been developing the brand further with a multimedia television series, DVDs, radio plays, apps and e-books. The book series itself also takes account of the changed viewing and reading habits of children. Since October 2013, the volumes of the non-fiction series for children from 8 years of age have been redesigned in terms of content and design.

The publisher gradually expanded the age group of the traditional brand to include the series Was ist was Junior for 4- to 7-year-olds (since 2007) and Was ist was mini (2010-2016) and the successor Was ist was Kindergarten (since 2016) for Children from 3 years. The company has been offering activity books for kindergarten and primary school children since the 1980s. This includes coloring books and sticker books. The publisher's series of learning aids for preschool and elementary schools are called Fit for School and Lernstern . Cloth, picture and cardboard books can be found in the miniwelt series (until 2016) and the label Pappebuch (since autumn 2016), which are aimed at babies and toddlers and are based on the individual stages of development. The Was ist Was First Reading series caters to the needs of novice readers with a large primer and a clear layout and has been supplementing the publishing program since June 2018.

In addition, the mosaic collections of the well-known GDR picture stories with the Digedags are published by Tessloff.

From 2013 to 2017 the publishing house published books with TING technology, in particular numerous Was-ist-was-junior volumes. When you tap the TING hearing pen, you can hear atmospheric noises, among other things. Rhymes, interactive games and a reading function give the books the character of a radio play.

In January 2018, Tessloff Verlag also published children's narrative books for the first time . The Little Major Tom series is all about the experiences of little Major Tom, his girlfriend, the young astronaut Stella and the robot cat Plutinchen. The idea is provided by the singer and author Peter Schilling with his world success Major Tom (completely detached) .

The digital audio pen BOOKii, developed by Tessloff, has been available since July 2018, which supplements the publisher's products with digital content. These include, for example, funny dialogues, atmospheric noises, interactive games and a reading function. The recording function and separate stickers should give the children a lot of freedom for their own creativity. BOOKii is an open system, which means that other publishers now also offer BOOKii products.
