Ragnar Tessloff

Ragnar Tessloff (born April 25, 1921 in Hamburg ; † May 8, 2009 ibid) was a German publisher of non-fiction books and founder of the Tessloff publishing house named after him .

Life

Ragnar Tessloff was born on April 25, 1921 as the son of the SPD politician Ernst Tessloff (1888–1973) in Hamburg . In 1947 his father founded Ernst Tessloff Verlag , which specialized in contemporary Scandinavian literature. Ragnar, who actually wanted to be a cameraman but was not allowed to study in Babelsberg , became a photographer instead . He portrayed movie stars like Hildegard Knef and Hans Söhnker . During this time he supplied the cover motifs for his father's publishing house.

On September 14, 1956, Ragnar founded his own publishing house in Hamburg, which was initially called "Neuer Tessloff Verlag" . He first published American comics , such as Tom & Jerry or Lassie, in German translation .

On a trip to America he got to know the Anglo-Saxon children's and non-fiction book series How And Why , whose concept he liked very much: The series tries to prepare topics in a child-friendly manner. In 1959 he acquired the license rights for Germany at the Frankfurt Book Fair and started the Was ist was series at Tessloff Verlag, which formed the basis for today's children's and youth book publisher.

Under the title When Hitler gambled away my violin. In 2003, he presented his autobiography to the notes of a young German .

On May 8, 2009, Tessloff died at the age of 88 in his home in Hamburg.
