The Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf (spelling: Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF ; officially: University of Film and Television Potsdam-Babelsberg ) is a state art and film university with the right to award doctorates in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam . It is the oldest and largest film school in Germany and the only one in university rank since 2014. It is also the only art college in Brandenburg and, together with u. a. the Babelsberg studio in the media city of Babelsberg .
history
The institution was founded with effect from November 1, 1954 as the German Academy for Film Art in Babelsberg Palace, with its headquarters in Potsdam-Babelsberg, and was renamed the GDR Academy for Film and Television in 1969 . In 1985 it received the suffix after the director Konrad Wolf , which it retained after its formal renaming in 1990 to the Potsdam-Babelsberg Film and Television Academy (HFF) and the conversion to the Babelsberg Konrad Wolf Film University on July 8, 2014 .
In October 2010, a founding board of trustees was set up to convert the previous university into a university , which advised the university management and the academic senate on the implementation of the tasks associated with the conversion and provided the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture with a decision proposal Conditions of conversion submitted. Effective July 1, 2014, the then incumbent Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg, Sabine Kunst , declared the Potsdam-Babelsberg University of Film and Television a university.
Until May 2000, the heads of the university held the title of rector, and since then president. The first rector of the university was Kurt Maetzig from 1954 to 1964 . He was replaced by Konrad Schwalbe , who headed the film school until 1969. Successors up to the political turning point were Lutz Köhlert (1969–1973), Peter Ulbrich (1973–1980), Konrad Schwalbe (1980–1986) and Lothar Bisky (1986–1990). After the reunification, Wolf-Dieter Panse was rector until 1995 . His successor and first president from 2000 until 2013 was Dieter Wiedemann . The first woman at the head of the university since 2013 and the university since 2014, Susanne Stürmer is the managing director of UFA Film & TV Produktion .
Education
The Film University Babelsberg offers courses on the subject of film. The degrees to be achieved are the Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts. The 2015/16 taught courses were animated , animation director, audio-visual application design, cinematography, digital media culture, writer / drama , film and television production , film heritage, film music , film and TV directing , media studies , installation , directing , acting , sound, Sound for picture, scenography / production design and scenography.
The Media Studies course is the most research-oriented course at the Film University and includes basic academic research and application-oriented research that reflects artistic practice. This includes media analysis, reception aesthetics, media conception and planning, culture and event management, program planning and development in audiovisual media, advice on the production and distribution of audiovisual media, journalistic, editorial and conceptual activities, conception and planning of educational and further training offers with media support , as well as university teaching and research. Students of the Media Studies course organize the largest student film festival in Europe every year with Sehs Bäumen , which takes place in April on the university campus and the Thalia art house cinema at the Babelsberg S-Bahn station .
The Film University is the only university in the German-speaking region to provide explicit training in the area of media-specific representation in its Acting degree program on the basis of sound theater training. In addition to participating in film and television productions, the drama students are already on stage at a city theater during their studies thanks to the long-standing cooperation with the Hans Otto Theater .
With its acting degree, the Film University is a member of the Standing Conference on Acting Education (SKS) . The courses film music and sound cooperate with each other and both are working, among other things with the in Film Studio Babelsberg -based German Film Orchestra Babelsberg together.
The Film University has set up institutes to expand research, teaching and further education as well as to profile its national and international collaborations . These include the Institute for Artistic Research and the Potsdam Film Museum . The Erich Pommer Institute and the Institute for Vocational Research and Corporate Planning Media are both organizationally and legally independent institutes .

Others
In 2011 the University of Film and Television donated an honorary prize for special artistic and scientific achievements. The first prize winner was Jürgen Böttcher as a successful graduate of the university "for outstanding international success in film and painting, for artistic freedom and political responsibility".
