action

Ben is in his early 20s and lives with his father in Halle an der Saale . The mother had died in a car accident two years earlier. While the father has given up, Ben tries to at least earn enough money by delivering travel brochures to keep both of them financially afloat. He dreams of traveling the world and at least gets in contact with travel agencies through his job. When he drives out another delivery, he parks in the second row. When a short time later the driver of the parked car tries to pull out of the parking space, Ben's old VW Polo does not start. Then he starts talking to the driver, at least briefly.

At home, Ben learns that his father has again missed an appointment for an interview. The employment office then cuts his unemployment benefit for twelve weeks . Ben's father reacts very negatively to the proposal to sell some of his mother's old furniture. So Ben starts looking for another part-time job, and his buddy Ingo offers to help him sell cigarettes. Gordon, Ingo's supplier, has “certain sources” that Ben doesn't want to know more about.

A few days later, while visiting a disco in Leipzig, he happened to meet the driver who had spoken to before and found out her name: Jana. The two chat outside the disco for a while and exchange their phone numbers. For the first time in a long time, Ben feels like things are looking up again. He brings a bottle of sparkling wine with him from shopping, which he empties with his father while they look at old holiday slides and talk about Ben's mother. Ben, who is still trying to get his father back on his feet, suggests that he wants to find work for his father. Phew, a friend of Ingo and Ben, then takes on the role of application advisor.

After several attempts, Ben finally managed to arrange an interview for his father, but his father does not get the job because of what he said in the interview. Ben is looking forward to at least being able to talk to Jana, but she is already looking forward to her departure: she wants to work as an au pair girl in Vancouver in Canada for a year . She has come up with a surprise for Ben: she gives him a plane ticket so that he can visit her in Canada and finally see something of the world again. But Ben, who feels responsible for his father, is anything but enthusiastic about the proposal.

Together with Ingo, Ben wants to use a not very clearly defined offer that Gordon gave them - with a certain Mola. But Ingo suddenly backs down, whereupon Mola also loses interest in Ben. There is a dispute between the friends, which finally culminates in a fight after Ingo accuses Ben of becoming just like his father.

When Ben finally comes home with a black eye and his father confronts him, his collar bursts. Furious, he gets in the car and drives off, regardless of speed limits or the like. His father, who was just as badly affected by the argument, meanwhile hurriedly clears the balcony door, which until then had been blocked with old furniture, and enters the balcony for the first time in years. In his car, Ben lets go of the steering wheel and risks losing control of the car for a few seconds. But suddenly he comes to his senses, stops in the middle of the street and throws up. When he returned home the next morning, his father was waiting for him, and he spoke to him. A short time later Ingo comes by and Ben can talk to him normally again.

reception

  • film-dienst 2/2006: The father-son story embedded in a socially realistic post-war drama is touching thanks to first-class actors, without slipping into sentimentality. A nice little (debut) film, cleverly thought out, entertaining and calm, which condenses into a lesson about grief, hope and solidarity.

About the end of the film: Ben is also reconciled with Jana, from whom Ben left without a word after spending the night together because she wanted to give him the plane ticket to Canada, which he did not accept because of his father, and they both go hand in hand in the town.

background

The film takes place in Halle-Neustadt. The city usually forms the gray and dreary background against which the actors interact. However, the action only takes place in rooms or at a distance from the city. If this mediating sector occurs anyway, it is only in the form of Halle's inner city. The integration of the cinematic plot into the city only emerges as a hypothesis and assertion at the end.

The title of the film is based on a play on words, see Halley's Comet .
