Topper does not give up is a German tragic comedy from 2010 . The real 3D short film was made at the Potsdam University of Film and Television as part of a research project on three-dimensional media consumption funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics .

action

Film student Axel (26) can hardly believe his luck: The hero of his childhood, the action legend Til Topper, plays the leading role in his short film. Axel's friend Marleen, who is supposed to take on the female lead in the film noir gangster comedy, is a bit more sober about the project. 1980s action flicks like "Operation Kobra", "Alone Among the Sharks" or "Hell is going on in the jungle" say little to her, but Axel's enthusiasm is contagious and the whole team is on the move with the "man in the hat" curious; excited. Topper himself no longer has anything in common with his image as a daredevil knocking on the streets. He sits cynical and bitter in the cold cloakroom and wonders how deep he must have sunk that he now has to give film students another hit. Nobody wants to see him. Least of all himself. But when his play partner and Axel's girlfriend Marleen introduces themselves to him in their breathtaking costume, his old macho and youthful hunting instincts awaken. Axel, who is happy that he has Topper under control thanks to Marleen, has to watch how Topper plays out his position of power and improvises long kissing scenes with his girlfriend. Finally Marleen bursts the collar, Topper leaves the set, Axel threatens to lose his film and his girlfriend. The all-important showdown then takes place in the film school's underground car park. In Toppers' films it is said when it gets really dark, "Topper doesn't give up!" ...

Production and publication

The film was created as a test film in the course of the PRIME research project (production and projection techniques for immersive media), which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics. Eight leading companies and research institutes have formed a consortium to develop pioneering technology and viable business models for the introduction of three-dimensional media consumption in cinema, TV and games. The project is so far the most complex of the film school in Potsdam-Babelsberg. During the shooting, a total of over 45 students were involved in the production.

"Topper does not give up" was realized in November 2009 by students of the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg at the Insight OUT / HFF Academy 2010 for the first time in a non-finished version. Another screening followed as part of a workshop discussion at the student film festival Sehsuchten 2010. In May 2010, the film then celebrated its official premiere in Berlin.

To market the film, posters of Topper's first major film, Operation Kobra, were hung at various receptions and parties as well as at the Berlinale at the 2010 Berlinale. Til Topper began to be active on various platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and to constantly talk about his past as the "greatest German action star of all time". Before the premiere, the complete biography of Til Topper and his extensive filmography was published on the official website for the film.

In cooperation with the online platform Moviac, it is possible to wish the film to be shown in a 3D cinema in one's city and thus to distribute the film throughout Germany. Several making-ofs and so-called topperettes were published on various platforms during the production time and gave an insight into the production of 3D films.

Reviews

Richard Raabensaat wrote on May 14, 2010 in the Potsdamer Neusten Nachrichten that the film was as it is “urgently needed by 3D cinema at the moment. Because 'Topper' does not rely on gaudy effects, but tells a well-constructed story with surprisingly coherent characters and a crew that shows the joy of the project even at the premiere. "
