action

25-year-old Lara leads a carefree life as an architecture student in Berlin . She has no financial worries because she is supported by her wealthy parents. During the day she attends a few lectures with her fellow student and best friend Nora , and in the evening she goes out to party with her in the city's clubs. One day they meet one of their lecturers , Martin, whom both women find attractive. Lara flirts with him, but by chance it is Nora who disappears into the night with him. Lara is disappointed. She wants to distract herself and continues to celebrate. Exhilarated by alcohol and ecstasy , she flirts violently with the bartender - unprotected sexual intercourse occurs in the club toilet.

The next day, she almost forgot about the one-night stand and is recovering from the night in her apartment when a neighbor, the Icelandic artist Elvar, rings her doorbell and asks her to take care of his pets while he is away. In his hands he carries a rabbit and a guppy . He gives the fish to Lara, who from then on takes care of the animal. Elvar and Lara become friends and she learns that he was only recently abandoned by his girlfriend Hanna after cheating on her. And she sees that the pet is a ball python that she is supposed to feed - rabbits - once a week.

When she felt pain in her abdomen after a few weeks , she found out from her gynecologist that she was pregnant . She will receive the address of a contact point for pregnancy conflict counseling if she wants to have the child aborted . Lara is unsure because she sees pregnancy as an opportunity to change her previously unsteady life. She goes to her parents and has to listen to her mother's allegations about her way of life. It comes to scandal , when she talks about her pregnancy - however her mother when she was younger than she Lara received .

Lara is going back to Berlin and is preparing for her new life in the coming weeks: Together with Nora she is renovating a room in her small apartment, buying baby clothes and furniture for the unborn child whose gender she has not yet wanted to know. At the same time, she continues to befriend Elvar, while Nora has met Martin in the meantime. The two best friends' lives now run in opposite directions: Nora enjoys the student and nightlife with Martin, while Lara prepares for her time with her child.

One day she felt violent child movements in her stomach, a few days later she suffered from bleeding . She rushes to her gynecologist, who has to find out an umbilical cord incident: The child died of hypoxia in the sixth month and now has to be surgically removed in order not to endanger Lara’s life. A world is collapsing for them. But she refuses to accept the stroke of fate and lets the following day of the operation pass by. She doesn't tell anyone about the death and even goes to her father's birthday party. Nora doesn't find out anything either, but Lara is more and more desperate. When a supplier brings the cot she ordered a few days earlier, she can no longer hold back her grief and sinks even further into a world of illusion by setting up the bed and sealing herself off.

A few days later, Martin comes to see her. He also knows nothing of their fate. Lara provokes him by drinking alcohol in front of his eyes - apparently pregnant for him. She wants to seduce him, but Martin pushes her away and hurries out of the apartment. In the stairwell he meets Nora, who also wanted to inquire about Lara. Furious, the two women fight and Nora leaves the apartment. Shortly afterwards, Lara collapses in the hallway.

She is taken to a hospital and operated on. She learns that it would have been a boy and is allowed to look at and touch her dead baby and say goodbye to him. In the final scene it becomes clear that Nora is still with Martin. Elvar got back together with his ex-girlfriend and the two plan to return to his homeland. Lara stays behind in Berlin - with Elvar's rabbit, which she did not feed the snake.

criticism

“The story, in its dramatic turn, is not quite everyday […] thanks to the main actress Aylin Tezel alone, who expresses the whole range of feelings in her role and does not allow a moment of boredom to arise. [...] The film conveys something of the zeitgeist of young people who feel overwhelmed by the many possibilities that are open to them and search in vain for a meaning in life and their happiness. With its twofold twist, the film shows that motherhood can change a person significantly without stylizing it as happiness alone. The visual implementation of Pola Beck's [...] debut film is also a success. "

Rudolf Worschech (epd Film) awards a good 4 out of 5 stars:

“[…]› In the sky the day ‹never slips into the melodramatic or maudlin. Although the widescreen camera always delivers great cinema pictures, the film's attitude remains sober. Which is also due to the impressive performance of actress Aylin Tezel [...]. Here she shows herself to be enormously versatile and even in the last part of the film without any hysteria, she can switch from naivety to thoughtfulness. "
