Abdomen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The abdomen is a term that is still popularly used today for the bowels of the pelvis. The term is used in everyday language as a non-specific collective term for internal organs of the abdominal cavity , the urinary bladder and, in women, the uterus , sometimes also to describe the sexual organs .

In the past, there was also the collective term abdominal disease in medicine for various clinical pictures that affected the intestine , bladder or the female reproductive organs. The term was often used as a euphemism in order not to have to specifically name health problems.

In the vernacular , the abdomen is primarily a synonym for the uterus and, correspondingly, abdominal complaints a paraphrase for so-called women's diseases .

Lower abdomen can also be colloquially the term for the entire lower body including legs. In the past, the attraction at annual fairs was often a "woman with no abdomen", where mirrors were used to create an optical illusion so that it looked as if a woman had no legs and was sitting with her hips on a table.
