Between the Chairs is a documentary by Jakob Schmidt from 2016 . He accompanies three prospective teachers through their legal traineeship, the practical part of teacher training for the state school system. The film celebrated its premiere on November 3, 2016 in the German competition of the DOK Leipzig documentary film festival and received numerous prizes there. On May 18, 2017, it came to the cinema across Germany. The nomination for the Grimme Prize in the "Information & Culture" competition followed on January 17, 2019 .

In order to become a teacher in Germany, you must properly complete the legal clerkship (also called preparatory service) after the theory-laden studies. A trial by fire that puts prospective teachers in a contradicting position: They teach while they are still learning. They give grades while they are in turn being graded. Between problem students, parents 'evenings, intrigues in the teachers' room and exam fears, the ideals of the candidates are put to a hard test. The film follows three of them on their stony path to their exams. At the same time he throws a humorous look behind the scenes of the school system and not least raises the question of what kind of society we want to live in.

The film was made as a final project at the Babelsberg Film University "Konrad Wolf" in coproduction with ZDF - Das Kleine Fernsehspiel (Editor: Jörg Schneider). It was shot at schools in Berlin over a period of over three years. He appears in the distribution of Weltkino .
