action

In order to become a teacher in Germany, you must properly complete the legal clerkship (also called preparatory service) after the theory-laden studies. A trial by fire that puts prospective teachers in a contradicting position: They teach while they are still learning. They give grades while they are in turn being graded. Between problem students, parents 'evenings, intrigues in the teachers' room and exam fears, the ideals of the candidates are put to a hard test. The film follows three of them on their stony path to their exams. At the same time he throws a humorous look behind the scenes of the school system and not least raises the question of what kind of society we want to live in.

production

The film was made as a final project at the Babelsberg Film University "Konrad Wolf" in coproduction with ZDF - Das Kleine Fernsehspiel (Editor: Jörg Schneider). It was shot at schools in Berlin over a period of over three years. He appears in the distribution of Weltkino .

criticism

In the MDR cinema magazine “Kino Royal”, Simone Unger judged that “Zwischen den Stühlen” was a great documentary because it managed to take a differentiated look behind the scenes of pedagogy. A must, not just for those who have long had doubts about the modern education system. "

Hans-Jörg Rother praises the film as “sensitive and with a sense of humor” in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “'Between the chairs', as the apt title suggests, raises many questions. What kind of people for what kind of society do we want to educate? Streamlined careerists shouldn't be, but neither should anyone be lost. Conveying elementary questions like these is probably the best that a film (...) can give the visitors on their way. "

On Programmkino.de Gaby Sikorski wrote, “Between the chairs” was “In the truest sense of the word: a very, very instructive and enjoyable film!” . The author juxtaposes the individual protagonists, in which he succeeds in "making each person for himself and everyone likable and lovable."

For the Leipziger Volkszeitung “Zwischen den Stühlen” is “an outstanding discovery of everyday German life” and “an amazing proof of talent”.

Awards

As part of the DOK Leipzig documentary film festival , the film received four prizes in 2016:

  • Documentary film award of the Goethe-Institut : "Sensitively and cinematically closely observed and without explanatory comments, the film shows how difficult it is to implement blueprints in reality."
  • Prize of the DEFA Foundation for an outstanding documentary
  • Healthy Workplaces Film Award: “A film of its time - stress personified. The characters are very well worked out and attractive, the filmmaker's cinema verité approach, i.e. his look 'behind the scenes', allows us to be very close to the human drama of the protagonists, which both touched our hearts and stimulated our minds . "
  • ver.di award for solidarity, humanity and fairness (ex aequo with "The Others" by Ayşe Polat )

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency also awarded the film the rating of “particularly valuable”. Jakob Schmidt comes “astonishingly close” to his protagonists and offers “an authentic and nuanced view of how teaching is done in German schools today and how stressful the teaching profession is in these times.” The film surprises “again and again because it is new Introduces aspects and perspectives into the film without ever losing sight of its three heroes. "

On January 17, 2019, the Grimme Institute announced that the documentary had been nominated for the 55th Grimme Prize in the “Information & Culture” competition along with 15 other productions.
