occupation

Fat Girls is a German independent - or Berlin Mumblecore - feature film by director Axel Ranisch. It was shot on a low budget and without a film crew , premiered at the Hof Film Festival in 2011 and awarded at the Slamdance Film Festival 2012 for its “bold originality” among other things. After numerous international festival participations, the theatrical release in Germany was on November 15, 2012.

action

Sven Ritter lives with his mother Edeltraut, who has dementia , and shares life with her, the apartment, even the bed. During the day he works in a bank. During Sven's working hours, Daniel comes into the apartment and takes care of Edeltraut, takes her to the hairdresser, walks, goes shopping and keeps the apartment in good condition. But one day Edeltraut makes off alone. The two men go looking for her. But what they find is not just Edeltraut, but a tender affection for each other that really messes up their lives.

background

Fat Girls developed from the idea to the finished film in just three months. The film was shot on the basis of a treatment that determined the order and content of all scenes. Dialogues and scenes were improvised by the main actors Heiko Pinkowski , Peter Trabner and Ruth Bickelhaupt. In order to create the greatest possible playful freedom and to create special authenticity, a film team was deliberately avoided and filmed with a simple MiniDV camera. Big Girls is the first feature film from the production company Sehr gute Films , which was founded in spring 2011 by Heiko Pinkowski, Dennis Pauls , Axel Ranisch and Anne Baeker.

criticism

“In what is perhaps the most beautiful entry in the feature-length film competition, for example, the two main characters only learn that there can be other life opportunities for them than the usual - which does not mean that one has to seize them because of that. Fat Girls, a no-budget film that is said to have cost 517 euros and a few crushed ones, is an inspiring piece of cinematic improvisation. […] Played grandly by Ruth Bickelhaupt, Heiko Pinkowski and Peter Trabner, director Axel Ranisch burns off a wonderful fireworks display of crude charm, wit and love of storytelling. Here three creative minds have freed themselves from the convention and the pressure of clothing and just started. The result radiates this liberation and lives in an exciting way from the personality of its makers. "(Oliver Baumgarten, cut November 2011)

“The images are out of focus and distorted, the sound is miserable. And yet Ranisch shot a moving tragic comedy, with a digital camera and improvised scenes, so that “Big Girls” looks like a home movie - which the film is in a certain way. [...] a story with silent film elements and a dash of bitter social romanticism in the style of Andreas Dresen . "(Julian Hanich, Der Tagesspiegel )

“Axel Ranisch's debut film is also about family. 'Big Girls' was shot with a sensational budget of 517.32 euros - and yet it is a very big cinema. The story of a son who lives with his demented mother and then falls in love with her carer was one of the festival's absolute highlights. A wonderfully wild and at the same time tender film, full of absurd humor and magical moments. And for a long time a gay love story has not been told as unsexy and casually as this one. The premiere audience rewarded the almost completely improvised film with thunderous and never-ending applause. She would never have seen such applause in Hof, commented the moderator on the situation. But probably not such a film either. "(Cornelis Hähnel, taz)

Awards

Jury statement: "Giving a script award is a difficult thing - especially since we as the jury have not read the script at all and therefore do not know it. We can only judge what direction and post-production have made of the written template. And that's exactly why it doesn't matter that our award winner's script, as we learned, only consisted of six loose pages. The decisive factor for us is what has become of this framework through improvisation: a story with three lovable characters, whose dramatic ups and downs are told with rare ease and above all personality. Why big event cinema when there are so intensely narrated, enchanting films like fat girls. "
  • Kinofest Lünen 2011: Berndt Media Prize for the best film title
Jury statement: “The title of our award-winning film - especially in combination with its poster - refers to its two heroes with loving irony. What they experience may not shake the world as such. Your own world, however, is very much: it is falling apart and only then is able to open up new horizons to you. The film describes a departure into the new, a way out of everyday life. How they get there is told with great humor and loving devotion. "
  • The film was shown under the title Heavy Girls at the Slamdance Film Festival 2012 and received two prizes: the “Spirit of Slamdance Sparky Award” for the team that best embodies the creative, independent and entrepreneurial spirit of the festival and the “Special Jury Award for Bold Originality ”(special jury award for bold originality).
