Ursula Gather (born April 28, 1953 in Mönchengladbach ) is Rector of the Technical University of Dortmund and Professor of Mathematical Statistics and Industrial Applications. Since October 1, 2013, she has been Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation .

Life

Gather graduated from high school in 1971 and graduated from RWTH Aachen University in 1976 with a degree in mathematics . From June 1976 to September 1986 she worked there as a research assistant at the Institute for Statistics and Business Mathematics. She completed her doctorate on outlier tests and the susceptibility to outliers of probability distributions in 1979 and completed her habilitation in 1984.

From August 1985 to May 1986 she was a professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa . In October 1986 Ms. Gather was offered a position at the Statistics Faculty of the University of Dortmund.

Gather has held several international visiting professorships, including at Yale University , Lille I University and La Trobe University in Melbourne. She was Vice Rector, Senate Member and Dean before she was elected Rector of the Technical University of Dortmund on May 30, 2008 by the University Council. She has been performing this function since September 1, 2008. Gather is involved in science management in many functions: From 1996 to 2002 she was appointed to the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Supervisory Board at Forschungszentrum Jülich . She was a member of the board of the German Statistical Society for eight years (2000 to 2008). For four years she took on the role of DFG liaison lecturer at the Technical University of Dortmund. From 2007 to 2011 she was a member of the Council of the International Statistical Institute . From 2008 to 2012 she held the office of chairwoman of the DFG Review Board Mathematics. She is the chair of the Friends of the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach . From 2007 to 2012 she was Deputy Chairwoman of the Senate of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In 2009, the DFG appointed Ursula Gather to the working group “Research-Oriented Equal Opportunities Standards”. She has been a member of the German Academy for Technical Sciences (acatech) since June 2010, and was elected to the Executive Committee in 2014. From 2016 to March 2018 she was an elected member of the Board of Trustees of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Since August 2016 she has been an ad personam member of the Senate of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

In October 2010 she was elected chairman of the regional rectors' conference (LRK) of the universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, succeeding Axel Freimuth , rector of the University of Cologne. She was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. From October 2015 to September 2018 she was deputy chairwoman of the LRK.

In 2011 she was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation . Since October 1, 2013, as the successor to Berthold Beitz, she has been chairwoman of the foundation's board of trustees and thus the most important shareholder representative at the industrial group Thyssen-Krupp . She has been a member of the supervisory board of the reinsurance company Munich Re since April 30, 2014 .

In November 2014 Ursula Gather was awarded the title of Citizen of the Ruhr Area . In February 2015, the Federal Minister for Education and Research, Johanna Wanka, appointed Ursula Gather to the High-Tech Forum, an advisory group to support the implementation and further development of the German government's high-tech strategy . In November 2015, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Łódź. On September 4, 2018, she received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Ursula Gather is married and has two sons.
