Eberhard Becker (* 1943 in Mecklenburg ) is a German mathematician and professor emeritus for algebra and was rector of the Technical University of Dortmund .

Life

Becker studied physics and mathematics in Hamburg. There he received his doctorate in 1972 on contributions to the theory of semisimple quadratic algebras and completed his habilitation in Cologne in 1976. In 1979 Becker was appointed to the mathematics department at the University of Dortmund.

After working as head of the institute, dean and member of the Senate, Becker became rector of the University of Dortmund on April 30, 2002. During his tenure, the Senate decided to rename “University of Dortmund” to “Technical University of Dortmund” at his request. This decision was not undisputed, especially in the humanities departments, but was confirmed with two thirds of the votes at the decisive Senate meeting. On September 1, 2008, he was replaced by Ursula Gather . On the occasion of his retirement on November 7, 2008, the Faculty of Mathematics organized a celebratory colloquium.
