Martin Schmeißer

Martin Schmeißer (born November 28, 1912 in Gotha ; † February 6, 1981 in Bad Neuenahr ) was a German chemist , rector of RWTH Aachen University and from 1968 to 1975 rector of the newly founded University of Dortmund .

Live and act

After studying chemistry and receiving his doctorate with Robert Schwarz with the dissertation " About Germaniumphenyl ", he worked for two years at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1936 to 1938 . Schmeißer then moved to the University of Königsberg , where he completed his habilitation on June 5, 1940 with the habilitation thesis " About bromine nitrogen ". He also succeeded in the synthesis of iodine (I) fluoride.

After the Second World War, he worked in industry for several years before moving to the University of Munich in 1949 . Here Schmeißer initially worked as a scientific assistant to Egon Wiberg and was taken on as an associate professor in 1955. In 1957, his former doctoral supervisor, Robert Schwarz , brought him to RWTH Aachen University , where he made him head of the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry and Electrochemistry . Just two years later, Schmeißer was elected Dean of the Faculty of General Sciences and, from 1961 to 1963, Rector of RWTH Aachen University.

In 1965, the state government decided to found a university in Dortmund , and in the same year the groundbreaking ceremony for the university library took place. From then on, Schmeißer acted as the founding rector, and on September 16, 1968 he was introduced as the rector of the newly founded university.

He was a member of the Strasbourg gymnastics club Alsatia zu Frankfurt in the CC and the gymnastics club Hansea Danzig zu Dortmund. In addition, Schmeißer belonged to several scientific working groups and supervisory boards.

Martin Schmeißer found his final resting place in the family crypt in Aachen's Westfriedhof .

Honors

For his services in Aachen, he was awarded the gold medal of the RWTH Aachen in 1970. Furthermore, in 1976 the Université de Picardie in Amiens made him an honorary doctorate .

In 1980 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Namesake

The Martin Schmeißer Foundation is named after him, which was founded on the initiative of the city of Dortmund and sponsors from Dortmund's economy. It realizes scholarships for students, researchers and foreign guests of the university.

Martin-Schmeißer-Weg and Martin-Schmeißer-Platz on the north campus of the University of Dortmund are also named after him .
