Ernst Michael Schmachtenberg (born April 26, 1952 in Aachen ) is a German engineer . He was Professor of Plastics Technology and Rector of RWTH Aachen University from 2008 to 2018 .

Life

Ernst Schmachtenberg studied mechanical engineering with a focus on plastics technology at RWTH Aachen University and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. In 1985 at the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) there with Georg Menges with a thesis on plastics materials science . PhD. He then headed the molded part design, materials science and fiber composites department at IKV. In 1987 he moved to the Süddeutsche Kunststoff-Zentrum (SKZ) in Würzburg as Head of Research & Development , where he later took over the management of the testing institute. From 1990 to 1992 he worked in application technology thermoplastics at Bayer AG in Leverkusen. After working in process engineering development for injection molding , he took over the management of the local department for construction, molded part testing and CAE.

In 1993 Schmachtenberg was appointed to the chair for plastics technology at the University of Essen and as managing director of the Institute for Plastics in Mechanical Engineering GmbH (IKM), a subsidiary of the Rheinisch-Westfälischer TÜV in Essen. From 1996 to 2000 he was also Vice-Rector of the University of Essen with responsibility for personnel and finances. Because of the merger of the Universities of Essen and Duisburg and the dissolution of the plastics technology course there, he moved back to Aachen, where he took over the chair for plastics materials technology at the IKV. The focus of his scientific work at the IKV lay in the field of materials technology for plastics, fiber-reinforced plastics, product development and computer-aided design.

From April 1, 2006 to July 31, 2008, he was the successor to Gottfried Wilhelm Ehrenstein, who held the chair for plastics technology (LKT) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Schmachtenberg was head of the innovation working group in the North Rhine-Westphalian industry initiative "Kunststoffland NRW" until 2006 and, since the founding of the Scientific Working Group of University Professors of Plastics Technology eV (WAK) from 1999 to November 2005, its deputy spokesman. He is also deputy chairman of the Scientific Working Group on Materials Technology

From August 1, 2008 to July 31, 2018, Ernst Schmachtenberg was Rector of RWTH Aachen University and thus successor to Burkhard Rauhut . He was also President of the TU9 (TU9 German Universities of Technology e.V., an amalgamation of nine leading technical universities in Germany) from 2010 to 2013 and President of the IDEA League from 2014 to 2018 . From 2010 to 2015 he was also chairman of the scientific advisory board and member of the executive committee of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). Schmachtenberg is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .

Schmachtenberg works and publishes in particular in the field of materials technology for plastics, fiber-reinforced plastics, plastic component development and computer-aided design.

His younger brother is Rolf Schmachtenberg , State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs .
