Friedrich Ferdinand Hermann Klockmann (born April 12, 1858 in Schwerin , † November 17, 1937 in Aachen ) was a German mineralogist and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Life

After graduating from the Grand Ducal Realschule, Friedrich Klockmann began studying mining and metallurgy at the Bergakademie in Clausthal (later Clausthal University of Technology ). Here he joined the Corps Hercynia . In 1878 he moved to the Bergakademie Berlin .

After a few lectures in science and philosophy Klockmann broke his previous studies and studied instead, from November 1880 Mineralogy and Geology at the University of Rostock , where he in 1881 to Dr. phil. (Dissertation: Contribution to the knowledge of the granitic rocks of the Giant Mountains ).

After initially working as an assistant geologist at the Prussian State Geological Institute in Berlin, he was promoted to Royal District Geologist in 1886.

Back at the Bergakademie Clausthal as a teacher of mineralogy, geology, petrification and deposit science, Klockmann wrote his famous textbook on mineralogy in 1891 , which is still the standard work in mineralogy, meanwhile in its 16th edition and several times revised and updated. From the 11th edition (1936) onwards, however, the textbook on mineralogy was edited by Paul Ramdohr , who was Klockmann's assistant. In 1891 Klockmann was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1899 Friedrich Klockmann received a chair for mineralogy and petrography at the Technical University of Aachen , which he held until his retirement in 1923. His successor was his previous assistant Paul Ramdohr. In the meantime, he succeeded August Hertwig as head of the university from 1917 to 1919 as its rector.

Klockmann found his final resting place in Schwerin.
