Helmuth Froschauer

Helmuth Emil Froschauer (born September 22, 1933 in Vienna ; † August 18, 2019 in Vienna) was an Austrian conductor and choir director .

Life and work

Froschauer a. a. with the Vienna Boys' Choir and while studying at the Vienna Music Academy in the subjects of piano , horn , composition and conducting.

From 1953 to 1965 he directed one of the choirs of the Vienna Boys' Choir. As Kapellmeister he led this ensemble on tours all over the world. At the same time, he was the musical director of Walt Disney Productions in Vienna in the early 1960s, overseeing several music films with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra .

From 1968 to 1991 Froschauer was successively - and for many years at the same time - solo répétiteur and choir director at the Vienna State Opera and choir director of the Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna , the Bregenz Festival and the Salzburg Festival in personal union.

As a close colleague of Herbert von Karajan , he was involved in the preparation of numerous concerts, recordings and television recordings at the Salzburg Festival , the Berlin and Vienna Festival Weeks.

Froschauer had been with Westdeutscher Rundfunk since 1992 , first as choir director, then from 1997/99 to 2003 as chief conductor of the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln , of which he was honorary conductor . Froschauer has also conducted the Sunday masses in the Vienna Hofburg Chapel with two other colleagues for many years , in which the Boys' Choir also participate.

He was buried at the Hütteldorfer Friedhof .

Froschauer's son is the violinist Daniel Froschauer , director of the Vienna Philharmonic .
