Adolf Wüllner (born June 13, 1835 in Düsseldorf , † October 6, 1908 in Aachen ) was a German physicist , especially in the fields of cathode and canal rays and the electrostriction of glass.

Live and act

Wüllner first studied physics at the Universities of Bonn and Munich , where he also received his doctorate in 1856. He then moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin for two years and from 1858 to the University of Marburg , where he completed his habilitation. During his studies in 1854 he became a member of the Frankonia fraternity in Bonn . In autumn 1862 he was appointed lecturer in physics at the Agricultural Academy in Poppelsdorf and at the same time held an extraordinary professorship at the University of Bonn. From 1863 Wüllner took over the management of the provincial trade school in Aachen and was already commissioned by the then incumbent district president Friedrich von Kühlwetter with the planning and preparatory work for the polytechnic school to be founded in Aachen, later the RWTH Aachen . Finally, on April 1, 1870, Wüllner was appointed professor of physics at this technical college, which was opened at the same time, and of which he was also rector from 1883 to 1886. He was also elected to the TH Senate almost continuously.

As a physicist, Wüllner was mainly active in experimental physics and dealt with the vapor pressure of the vapors of salt solutions and liquid mixtures. He also worked on the specific heat of the allotropic modifications of various solids as well as liquids and gases according to the density of saturated vapors. He was also active in the fields of electricity and optics .

As a part-time job, Adolf Wüllner was also a member of the city council and the lighting and music committee in Aachen . After his death, the street that connects the main building of the RWTH Aachen with the Audimax of the university was named after him in his honor. The Dresden University of Technology honored him and his work with an honorary doctorate years earlier. In 1873 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1889 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Adolf Wüllner found his final resting place in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .
