The Yatagan ( Turkish Yatağan ; also Jatagan ) is an Ottoman saber , which is named after the city of the same name in southwest Turkey.

In Germany and south-eastern Europe , this type of weapon is often incorrectly referred to as a handshar . However, this is a dagger with a curved blade, which was also part of the armament of the Janissaries .

description

The Yatagan has a long, single-edged blade that can be straight or curved slightly S-shape.

history

The yatagan was used from the mid-16th century to the early 20th century. The Turkish infantry , for example the janissaries, wore a relatively short version of the yatagan that did not interfere with the march. In the Balkans , the Yatagan was also a weapon of the Heiducken during this period, who usually acquired a Yatagan as a prey weapon .

In the mid-19th century, the Yatagan became the "fashion" for military armament. 1840 was used in France for the musket M 1840 a yatagan modeled blade for bayonet , 1856, the sergeants of the United Kingdom were given a yatagan for the Enfield Rifled Musket , just for Württembergische hunting rifle in 1860 and for the French Chassepot M 1866. Also the 8 mm Kropatschek infantry rifle for Portugal received a Yatagan in 1886.

The Werndl rifle M1867, developed immediately after the defeat of 1866, was equipped with a Jatagan bayonet with a blade length of 58 cm as standard. Since this length turned out to be too unwieldy, the blade length was shortened to about 48 cm in the following models.
