Erich Kühn (architect)

Erich Kühn (born March 14, 1902 in Lütgendortmund ; † December 7, 1981 in Aachen ) was a German architect , construction clerk and university professor .

Life and work

After attending elementary school and high school , Kühn studied architecture in Munich and Berlin . He obtained his diploma in 1926. He then worked for the municipal building authorities in Dortmund and Kassel and as a technical secretary for Allgemeine Häuserbau AG . After a period as a freelance architect (1930 to 1935) he was head of the planning office in Eberswalde until 1939 . From 1939 to 1945 he was a district building officer in Minden .

On September 19, 1945, the British military administration appointed Kühn as District Administrator of the Minden district , only to recall him on December 4, 1945 and appoint Gerhard Bothur as his successor.

Kühn was then a planning advisor to the President of the Province of Westphalia and from 1947 set up and headed the Office for State Maintenance . Activities at various ministries of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia followed. He was responsible for the formulation of the Fredeburg guidelines (school building guidelines ) on the school building committee.

In 1953 he was appointed to the chair of urban and regional planning at RWTH Aachen University as the successor to René von Schöfer . From October 1, 1965 to September 30, 1967 he was also rector of the university. On June 26, 1980, in recognition of his very special efforts to combine science, art and technology, to expand urban planning thinking and to promote dialogue in our university, he was awarded the title " Honorary Senator ".
