Gerhard Curdes (born April 27, 1933 in Rengsdorf , Neuwied district ) is a retired university professor for urban development and regional planning at the Rheinisch-Westfälische-Technische Hochschule Aachen . His main research areas included urban planning , urban development and urban morphology ; as a city planner, the focus was on public spaces; he developed planning principles for the city and region of Aachen.

Career

Curdes was born in Rengsdorf in 1933. From 1947 to 1950 he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter up to the journeyman's examination , after which he worked as a construction and furniture carpenter until 1953.

From 1953 Curdes studied architecture , first until 1956 at the State Art School Bremen and after first employment from 1959 at the Ulm School of Design . At the HfG he was editor of the student magazine output from 1961 to 1963 . He is also a member of the club off ulm, which is dedicated to safeguarding the heritage of the HfG through conferences and publications and the Hfg archive u. a. initiated through loans.

He then initially worked in the field of urban and regional development at an institute for trade research (Institute for Commercial Enterprises in Urban Development - INGESTA, Cologne). From 1964 to 1967 he was group leader for urban and regional planning. There he worked on, among other things, reports on the customer catchment areas of 35 city centers in the Ruhr area and the development of secondary centers in the Ruhr area. In 1965 he was a founding member of the Gesellschaft für Regionalforschung (GfR), the German section of the Regional Science Association, Philadelphia. From 1967 to 1971 he was scientific secretary and editor of the seminar reports of the GfR. In 1967 he was appointed to the planning staff of the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia . He belonged to it until 1969. There he worked out the spatial parts of the Ruhr development program and the 1975 North Rhine-Westphalia program.

From 1969 to 1971 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Environmental Planning Ulm at the University of Stuttgart (former University of Design). In 1971 he was appointed to the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen. There he was full professor and director of the institute for urban development and regional planning from 1971 to 1998. From 1972 to 1978 he was also active as an expert citizen in the committee for urban planning and urban development of the city of Aachen and from 1978 to 1980 a member of the KMK - WRK commission to develop the framework architecture.

In 1965 he was one of the founding members of the Society for Regional Research, the National Group of the Regional Science Association, Philadelphia, and temporarily its scientific secretary. From 1986 to 1991 he was chairman of the Society for Regional Research and from 1990 to 1994 German representative in the Association of European Planning Schools (AESOP). After a year he left his own architectural office with two partners, which he founded in 1981 due to lack of time.

In 1979 he was offered a chair for urban and regional planning at the Technical University of Berlin, but stayed in Aachen. In 1980 he was appointed to the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning .

In the academic self-administration of RWTH Aachen University, he was a long-time member of the faculty council of the Faculty of Architecture. From 1976 to 1977 he was Head of Department of Architecture, 1992 to 1994 Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and at times member of the University Finance Committee , the Environmental Forum and, 1986 to 1992, member of the Senate of RWTH Aachen University.

Curdes was a specialist judge in numerous competitions, a reviewer for the German Research Foundation and a consultant for the city of Cologne in preparation for the application for European Capital of Culture .

Since his retirement in 1998 he has worked a. a. with the establishment of a portal on the history of the city of Aachen. From 2009 he developed a portal on climate change and urban planning for the RWTH Aachen Environmental Forum.

From 2005 to 2019 Curdes was a member of the working group for the preservation of monuments at the city of Aachen. The working group suggested setting up the Center Charlemagne as part of the Route Charlemagne of the city of Aachen and establishing the Euregio Meuse-Rhine history network . In 2014 Curdes organized events for the history network together with the city of Aachen to commemorate the world wars in the Aachen region.

Curdes has two sons and lives with his wife in Aachen.
