August Schwemann

August (Wilhelm) Schwemann (born May 23, 1862 in Hildesheim ; † April 3, 1945 in Bad Hindelang ) was a German mining expert and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1882, Schwemann studied mining and metallurgy at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and at the Bergakademie Clausthal . After completing his miner's exam in 1892, he initially worked as an assistant at several institutions before he was appointed full professor of mining science at the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy, Chemistry and Electrical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University on October 1, 1904. He stayed here until his retirement in 1929, was in the meantime promoted to the secret mountain ridge and headed RWTH Aachen from 1922 to 1924, also succeeding Paul Gast as its rector and then for another three years as prorector under Hermann Bonin .

His main area of ​​research and teaching was the entire field of deep drilling , but in addition to that, he became increasingly committed to academic self-government, especially later as rector and prorector.

Honors

RWTH Aachen honored August Schwemann with the title of Doctor Ing. H. and as the namesake of the Schwemann Foundation for the chair for mining science , donated by his students and friends on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of service as a professor in 1930. The foundation initially had a capital stock of 11,000 Reichsmarks and the interest should be used for the interests of the chair become.
