Ulrich Rüdiger (born September 25, 1966 in Helmstedt ) is a German physicist and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

academic career

Ulrich Rüdiger studied physics at the RWTH Aachen from 1988 to 1994. In 1997 he was awarded a doctorate by Gernot Güntherodt for his work on preparation, characterization and Kerr spectroscopy on MnBi thin films with regard to their applicability as a magneto-optical storage medium. rer. nat. PhD . He was initially a research assistant at the 2nd Physics Institute of the RWTH, from 2000 academic councilor. From 1997 to 1998 he was a postdoc at New York University . In 2002 , he completed his habilitation with the thesis Spin-Dependent Transport Phenomena: Materials, Magnetoresistance, and Applications .

In 2002 he received a call for a professorship in the Department of Physics at the University of Konstanz with the department of basic research in nanotechnology and magnetism. From 2003 to 2007 he was dean of the faculty. In addition to other university duties, he was deputy chairman of the teacher training center from 2004 to 2007. Since 2007 he has been Vice Rector for Research and accompanied the first funding phases of the Federal and State Excellence Initiative.

On February 2, 2009 he was elected Rector by the Senate of the University of Constance. In this office he succeeded Gerhart von Graevenitz , who did not stand for re-election and handed over his office to Rüdiger on October 1, 2009. The success of the University of Konstanz in the second funding phase of the federal and state excellence initiative falls during his tenure as rector . In June 2012, the University of Konstanz was successful with all four applications submitted, including the extension application for its future concept, and was funded until 2017. On November 6, 2014, he was re-elected as Rector of the University of Konstanz for a term of eight years (October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2023). He was followed by neuroscientist Kerstin Krieglstein in the rector's office of Konstanz University on August 1, 2018 .

Since August 1, 2014, he has been Vice President for Research and Young Academics at the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).

On March 5, 2018, he was elected to succeed Ernst Schmachtenberg as Rector of RWTH Aachen University. He took office on August 1, 2018.

Rüdiger is married and has four children.
