Bernhard Sann

Bernhard Sann (born June 16, 1910 in Buer ; † August 8, 1990 in Bad Wildbad ) was a German aircraft designer and mining engineer and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1931, Sann studied aircraft construction at RWTH Aachen University and graduated in 1936 with an engineering degree . A year earlier, he was responsible for the flight Academic Association Aachen in the development of self-supporting means Deckers with gull wing FVA-10, christened the name "Theodor Bees" involved. He then switched to the aviation engineering school in Thorn in West Prussia , where he completed his doctorate in 1939 with the dissertation: " Drive, drag and lateral force measurement on rotating long projectiles at subsonic speeds ". After the Second World War and a short time as a prisoner of war, Sann decided to pursue a new subject. He moved to the Ruhr area , where he initially trained as a pit electrician and was then taken on as the first machine climber. A few years later he also received a teaching position at the mining schools in Essen and Bochum .

In 1960, Sann accepted a call to RWTH Aachen, where he became effective April 1st. J. received a chair in mining science at the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy. Sann worked here until his retirement in 1978 and was also elected to several offices of academic self-government during this time. From 1973 to 1977 he was the successor to Hans Schwerte and headed the university as its rector, was prorector and dean of his faculty and was a member of the senate for 13 years.

At the Montanuniversität Leoben, Prof. Sann received his doctorate in 1976 with the dissertation "The chain scraper conveyor, its funding possibilities and its static and dynamic stresses". mont. PhD.

Despite the workload, he never lost his original passion for aviation and founded the flying group at RWTH Aachen e. V. (FTHA), which still owns a training aircraft named after Sann.

Bernhard Sann died on October 8, 1990 in Bad Wildbad and found his final resting place in the family grave at the Aachen forest cemetery .

Honors

A few months after leaving the university , Bernhard Sann was named an honorary senator of RWTH Aachen “ in recognition of his outstanding services to the Technical University of Aachen, in particular through the comprehensive exercise of his offices in the various positions of academic self-administration ” . Furthermore, he was honored with the award of the Great Federal Cross of Merit and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . He received the Medal of Honor from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan .
