Günter Urban

Günter Urban (born October 6, 1926 in Bochum ; † June 27, 2017 in Aachen ) was a German building historian and university professor . From 1972 to 1992 he held the chair for building history and monument preservation at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen .

Live and act

Urban studied art history , archeology and folklore at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Pisa from 1947 to 1953 . In 1953 he was trained by Harald Keller at the Art History Institute in Frankfurt with the work Der Vierungsturm up to the end of the Romanesque style with special consideration of the German development to become a Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1954, Urban received a scholarship at the Bibliotheca Hertziana and focused on the early Renaissance in Rome. In 1956 he became a research assistant at the Hertziana, and in 1958 he moved to Bonn University .

In 1960 Urban was appointed by the Senate of the Max Planck Society as the successor to the fatally injured Hanno Hahn as head of the department for South Italian art research at the Hertziana.

In 1969 , Urban completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt with a thesis on Lombard and Romanesque church architecture and building sculpture in Campania . In 1970 he became a private lecturer in Frankfurt am Main . In 1972, as the successor to Willy Weyres , he was offered the chair for building history and monument preservation at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University. In 1979 he was Vice Rector, 1980 to 1984 Rector of RWTH Aachen University , 1982 to 1985 Chairman of the State Rectors' Conference of North Rhine-Westphalia.
