Ottmar Knacke

Ottmar Knacke (born November 15, 1920 in Neisse , Upper Silesia, † March 9, 2004 in Imperia (Liguria) ) was a German metallurgist and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bochum in 1939, Knacke studied physics and chemistry in Königsberg, Danzig, Berlin, Breslau and most recently in Rostock, and passed his state examination in 1948. Two years later he received his doctorate. rer. nat. with Iwan Stranski at the Technical University of Berlin . Together with his former doctoral supervisor Stranski and others, he then brought out the widely acclaimed work: " The Theory of Crystal Growth " in 1952 . His habilitation followed a year later.

In 1960 Knacke finally accepted a call to RWTH Aachen University, where he was appointed full professor at the Faculty of Metallurgy on April 1st and was given the field of nuclear fuel metallurgy and theoretical metallurgy. Here he worked until his retirement in 1986 and in the meantime headed the university as its rector from 1977 to 1980 as the successor to Bernhard Sann .

The TU Berlin recognized him for his outstanding scientific achievements in 1993 with the appointment of Dr. Ing. E. h.
